2011 Opel/Vauxhall Meriva Official Revealed
Posted by: | CommentsThese are the first official pictures of Vauxhall’s new Meriva, which is set to turn the conventional concept of family-car usability on its head with a combination of clever, rear-hinged back doors which radically improve access/egress, and a raft of unique cabin features that boost interior versatility.
The new Meriva, which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year, is the first Vauxhall to feature FlexDoors, showcased in 2008’s Meriva design concept.
FlexDoors are rear-hinged back doors which swing open towards the back of the car at an angle of nearly 90 degrees, vastly improving the ease with which occupants enter and leave the cabin. Rather than having to step back, or to one side, as one would using a normal front-hinged door, the FlexDoor allows unimpeded forward access/egress to and from the cabin, enhanced further by the Meriva’s exceptionally high roof line.
For parents with children, there are further benefits. Due to the larger door opening and free space around the B-pillar, parents can lift small children forwards in to rear-mounted, second-stage child seats without having to contort themselves around a door. And with both the front and rear doors open (the fronts open at a similar angle to the rear FlexDoors) a ‘parent-friendly’ zone is created with no door barrier between front and rear occupants.
Crucially, the FlexDoors can only be opened by occupants while the car is stationary, an automatic lock engaging as soon as the car pulls away.
While the concept of two rear-hinged back doors is not new in the motor industry, the Meriva’s FlexDoor system is the first time it has been used on a family car in recent years. But unlike other rear-hinged door applications (Rolls Royce Phantom/Ghost and Mazda RX8), the Meriva benefits from front and rear doors that open independently, and does not require rear passengers to sit behind the door opening.
Class-leading in-cabin flexibility
Once inside the new Meriva, buyers benefit from two further groundbreaking innovations. The FlexRail adopts a completely fresh approach to the design of a car’s centre console, and provides owners with a variety of modular storage and comfort solutions that fix on to an ingenious dual-rail base. The new Meriva’s storage bin and cubby count has also increased, meaning that owners now benefit from one of the most practical cabins in class.
In addition, the current Meriva’s much-praised FlexSpace system has evolved with even greater practicality. Now more intuitive to use, the new Meriva’s FlexSpace allows easier fold-down of the rear seats, while moving the rear seats to create more boot, leg or shoulder room is simpler than ever.
The new Meriva’s seat comfort has also advanced, with the adoption of front seat technology from the Insignia and Astra. Like these cars, the Meriva offers the biggest range of seat adjustment in class, extending to 240mm in length and 65mm in height.
New Meriva adopts design language from Insignia and new Astra
The current Meriva effectively created the compact monocab sector when it was launched in 2003, but since then Vauxhall’s design language has evolved steadily, with big strides being made with the European Car of the Year-winning Insignia and more recently with the launch of the all-new Astra.
No surprise, then, that the new Meriva has adopted a more expressive and dynamic silhouette to its basic cab-forward monocab design. Like the Insignia and Astra, a ‘blade’ features down the side of the body, complementing a window line with a distinct ‘wave’ accentuating the FlexDoors, allowing panoramic views for rear passengers.
The design theme continues in the Meriva’s cabin, with cues taken from the Insignia and Astra enhancing the perceived quality of the materials.
Advanced chassis and more efficient powertrains
With a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks, buyers will see a marked improvement in the new Meriva’s ride and handling qualities.
They’ll also see a reduction in running costs, since the engine line-up – which features six turbocharged units and power outputs from 75 to 140PS – benefits from an average fuel consumption/CO2 reduction of 15 per cent, or -25g/km across the range. A high mpg/low CO2 ecoFLEX model will also be available.
More information will be available closer to the Meriva’s debut at Geneva.
2010 Opel Corsa in Detail
Posted by: | CommentsThe updated Opel Corsa is expected to come in January 2010. The small car features a lot of changes like re-vamped powertrain line-up, chassis improvements and a steering recalibration. The new Corsa will offer much better performance at even lower fuel consumption. Besides that the comfort for occupants is improved and the driving experience is far better, than the previous version of the car.
The exterior has no changes at all, the main updates are under the skin of Corsa. There are two available models – the coupé-like three-door and the family friendly five-door model. The small car is so well appreciated all over the world, that it accounts for some 30 percent of Opel/Vauxhall total sales.
The new engine line-up included in Opel Corsa models fully complies with Euro 5 standards. All engines have been revised to lower the fuel consumption and the harmful CO2 emissions. The 1.2 and 1.4 liter Twinport engine are each available in two versions with different outputs according to the customer wishes. Some of them prefer better fuel efficiency, the others will opt the better performance. The power units from 1.0 to 1.4 liter now need only 5 to 5.5 liters gasoline per 100km and on the top of this the maximum CO2 is 129 g/km.
The changes, which delivered these low numbers are:
A new oil pump optimizes oil pressure and reduces frictions, lowering fuel consumption.
A newly developed double camshaft phaser on the 1.2- and 1.4-liter engines improves the combustion process, allowing increased power and torque.
A new management of the thermostat reduces the engine warm-up phase, further lowering fuel consumption and emissions.
A shift-up indicator in the cluster informs drivers how they can save fuel.
The least powerful engine is 1.0 liter 3-cylinder with 65hp and 90N/m of torque. The previous generation of this engine developed only 60hp and 88Nm of torque and it had higher fuel consumption. The new engine reduced fuel consumption and emissions with a 13 percent. Now it needs 5.0 liter fuel and emits 117 g/km (from 5.6 liter/100 km and 134 g/km).
In this power segment Corsa is available with 1.2 liter 4-cylinder petrol engine developing 70hp and 115N/m of torque. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are respectively 5.3 liter/100 km and 124 g/km.
In the next greater powered segment Corsa offers new version of 1.2 liter engine with 85hp and 115N/m of torque. Again there are increasing of the horse powers and N/m with 5 and reducing of the fuel consumption and emissions with an 11 percent with manual transmission and with a 13 percent with Easytronic manual automated transmission. (5.1 liter/100 km and 119 g/km CO2 vs 5.8 l and 137 g).
Here is the new generation of 1.4 liter, which now have a capacity of 1,398 cc. It develops 87hp and 130N/m of torque. The fuel consumption is just 5.5 liter / 100km and the CO2 are only 129 g/km. The improvement compared to the previous version is 12 percent.
In the 100hp segment there is another 1.4 liter engine with exactly this amount of hp and 130N/m of torque. This engine needs only 5.5 liter /100 km and emits 129 g/km CO2. The acceleration and the top speed aren’t impressive, but they are good enough for everyday driving – 0 to 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds and top speed of 180 km/h.
The 1.6 liter turbo petrol engine installed in the Corsa GSi developes 150hp and the OPC version reaches 192hp. The engine is calibrated for Euro 5, so there are significant improvement in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The sporty power unit now needs 7.3 l for 100 km and emits just 171 g/km on the GSI and 172 g/km on the OPC.
Because of the engines updated and especially boosting the torque at the lower revs, there are significant changes in the transmissions. The customers can choose between gearboxes with performance-oriented short- or economy-focused wide ratios.

There are two new diesel engines available for 2010 Corsa. The mighty 1.7CDTI with 130hp and 300Nm of torque and the extreme fuel efficient 1.3CDTI ecoFLEX.
The 1.7CDTI is just a masterpiece by offering extraordinary good figures. The new version develops 130hp and 300Nm of torque, respectively with 5 and 20 more than the previous. The car has also greater top speed and better acceleration – 0-100km/h in 9.5 seconds and top speed of 200km/h. Besides that, because of the increased torque the car now accelerates from 80 to 120km/h in 5th gear in 9.3 seconds. On the top of everything the new 1.7CDTI now emits only 118 g/km CO2
The upgrades of 1.7CDTI include a new turbo charger, a new fuel injection system, reducing of the load on the generator, a new lighter intake manifold. Everything that helped the engineers to make the engine Euro 5 compliant.
1.3CDTI ecoFlex is the lowest emitting engine available for the new Corsa. It develops 95hp and 190Nm of troque. This engine not only emits just 98 g/km CO2 , but it needs 3.7 litres of diesel to cover 100km. This version replaces the 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX with 75hp and 109 g/km CO2 , which was only available in 3-door version.

The chassis improvements include:
On all models except OPC, engineers have modified the rear axle by rotating the torsion profile of the compound crank by 20° – from 15 to 35°. This results in improved stability in lane-change maneuvers.
On the comfort chassis (from all models except the Sport trim as well as the GSi and OPC versions), dampers in the front and the rear have been re-tuned to further improve the ride comfort without compromising the driving dynamics. At the same time, engineers have opted for new, softer jounce bumpers in the front struts. The ecoFLEX models also get softer jounce bumpers in the rear.
All diesel variants are also equipped with new, softer front springs.
All Corsa equipped with the comfort chassis received a new front anti-roll bar, whose diameter has been increased by 1 mm.
The mountings of the stabilizer have been re-designed on all variants, resulting in reduced body roll, and compensating for the softer set up of the suspension.
The pricelist will be available later this year.
2010 Opel Corsa ecoFLEX in Detail
Posted by: | CommentsStarting January 2010, the new Opel Corsa ecoFLEX is more respectful of the environment and fun to drive than ever. It is powered by a sophisticated, 70 kW/95 hp 1.3 CDTI diesel engine boosted by a turbo with a variable geometry. It is packed with 28 percent more power than the previous generation Corsa ecoFLEX even though fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are slashed by some 10 percent – yet the price is the same as the standard 90 hp Corsa 1.3 CDTI.
The new Corsa ecoFLEX illustrates Opel’s philosophy of developing ecologically responsible cars that are still fun to drive. With its 190 Nm of torque available between 1750 and 3250 rpm, this Corsa ecoFLEX needs only 3.7 l/100 km, releasing just 98 g/km CO2 as a three-door. The five-door Corsa emits 99 g/km.
Both versions are equipped with a standard Diesel Particulate Filter which dramatically reduces the emissions that are the most detrimental to health. With this Corsa ecoFLEX, fleet and private drivers in many European countries may benefit from special eco tax advantages without polluting the air with diesel particulates.
Also, the new Corsa ecoFLEX can be ordered with a variety of equipment variants. This means that customers have the choice of which trim and equipment they would like in their car, from the starter level up to optimized Cosmo variant.
The engine of the new Corsa ecoFLEX combines two strengths: low CO2 and high performance. Opel engineers achieved this by using a turbo with variable turbine geometry, which significantly improves the engine’s performance. To support the higher turbo pressure, engineers slightly reduced the compression ratio from 18 to 16.8: 1. Opel engineers optimized the calibration on the engine; they greatly increased low-end torque and the peak power, making a new transmission set-up possible: A longer transmission gear ratio was selected for the five-speed unit. The new 95 hp has a top speed of 177 km/h and needs only 12.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill. This ‘’wide ratio, eco-friendly ‘’ gear set work together to lower CO2 values below 100g.
Aerodynamics has been improved by lowering the car by 20 mm and optimizing the air flows via the air intakes. Wheels are fitted with newly designed, more efficient wheel caps. The Corsa ecoFLEX is equipped with special, 175/70 tires that are roll-resistance-optimized and fitted to lighter, flow formed , 14” steel wheels – 15” wheels are optional.
