Porsche 997

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RSR is ready to race. The top model of Porsche Motorsport’s customer racing vehicles will head into the 2012 season with extensive modifications. Particularly striking at first glance are the changes to the body: the width of the new GT3 RSR has grown by 48 millimetres. Built to conform to the A.C.O. “LM” GTE regulations, the 911 represents the crowning pinnacle of a range of successful customer sport race cars that are based on the 997 type 911 GT3 RS street sports car.

Powering the new 911 GT3 RSR is a particularly efficient six-cylinder boxer engine with a four-litre capacity. With a mandatory air-restrictor, it generates 460 hp (338 kW) and drives the 310 millimetre wide rear wheels. The diameter of the front wheels has increased by 30 mm to now measure 680 millimetres. The Porsche sequential six-speed gearbox is operated via paddle shifts on the steering wheel.

The nose and rear panels are adapted to the flared front and rear wheel arches, as are the door sill and the wheel arch coverings. The aerodynamic concept is complemented by a new ducting of the intake air. Openings in the rear side sections, as known from the turbo variants of the Porsche 911, replace the air scoop on the engine hood, which is very similar to the 911 GT2 RS street sports car.

The new 911 GT3 RSR can be raced at the Le Mans 24 Hours, the FIA World Endurance Championship, the Le Mans Series, the American Le Mans Series as well as the International GT Open and in other series and races.

“Our customer teams can expect a technically mature, high performance race car with which they will be highly competitive at international long distance races,” assures Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport. “Our test programme on various international race tracks is currently running at full speed. We are very pleased with the car’s performance and driveability.”

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RSR will be delivered to customer squads around the world from January 2012. The selling price is 498,000 Euro plus value added tax of the respective countries.

The Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG, Wolfgang Porsche and Matthias Müller, today joined numerous guests from the world of politics and business in laying the foundation stone for the second extension of the company’s Leipzig factory site. It is an important milestone, and one which writes another chapter in the successful history of Porsche in the Saxony region of Germany.

“We are investing another 500 million euro in the production facility to build the ‘Cajun’ in Leipzig. This is not just a mark of confidence in the manufacturing skills of our Leipzig colleagues, but also an important contribution to the economic development of the region.” said Matthias Müller on the morning of the festivities.

Porsche Board of Management member with responsibility for production Wolfgang Leimgruber added: “We want to expand the production of high-performance sports cars and off-road vehicles in Leipzig. At the same time the ambition is for the plant to achieve the highest standards with a forward-looking quality strategy.”

More than 1,000 new jobs and a new 17 hectare production site are being created to handle the production of the ‘Cajun’. “The fact that the assembly plant is now to become a fully fledged factory with body assembly line and paint shop is an enormous motivation for me and my team,” explained Siegfried Bülow, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche Leipzig GmbH, citing as a challenge the tough timetable governing the plant extension, with production of the ‘Cajun’ scheduled to start as early as the end of 2013. “The acquisition and qualification of new staff is also an important item on our agenda. We are trusting in tried-and-tested processes, thus ensuring that the first ‘Cajun’ from Leipzig is of outstanding ‘typical Porsche’ quality, setting standards in its class.”

The Leipzig Porsche plant is also setting environmental standards, being one of the world’s most efficient car factories. For example, the very efficient air recirculation and power cut-off technologies in the paint shop ensure particularly economical energy use. “Sustainability of the very highest order is enshrined in our environmental principles. Our use of ultra-modern equipment and facilities is a valuable contribution to frugal automotive engineering,” said Wolfgang Leimgruber.

Leipzig Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung also emphasised the impressive development of the site: “The decision by Porsche in 1999 to build a plant in our city brought the industrial site to life with a kiss. Porsche was followed by many important business start-ups, putting Leipzig in the fast lane. Ten years and more than 420,000 ‘Made in Leipzig’ Porsches later, this industrial site has finally come of age.”

The Porsche site in Leipzig has been producing the Cayenne since it opened in 2002. After a first extension, the four-seater Panamera Gran Turismo has also been produced here since 2009. It is assembled alongside the Cayenne on the mixed-model assembly line. Porsche has invested approximately 280 million euro in the Leipzig site to date.

With the efficient and agile ‘Cajun’, Porsche is expanding its SUV segment which is in high demand around the globe. With typically Porsche characteristics, the light and nimble ‘Cajun’ will inject fresh momentum alongside the new generation Cayenne, which has consolidated its market position as one of the most successful sporting all-wheel drive vehicles in the premium segment to a significant degree. The ‘Cajun’ is intended – alongside the Boxster, the market-leading two-seater mid-engined sports car – to provide an attractive route for new, younger customers to enter the world of Porsche.

Hellboy with 465 PS

edo competition presents the most powerful Panamera S with new aerodynamics

It could be straight from hell.

After the Panamera Turbo, Porsche’s most powerful sedan, had already received a full performance and aerodynamics makeover from edo competition, the logical next step was to take on the 400 horsepower Panamera S.

We made use of our experience in aerodynamics and worked to make ideal use of the engine’s power reserves, because added performance and better design really do bring about an extra helping of driving pleasure.

The output of the Panamera’s direct-injected V8 engine was increased from 294 kW/400 hp to 342 kW/465 hp. This enables the Panamera to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds and reach a top speed of over 305 km/h (190 mph).

Engine: Driving a Porsche Panamera is nice enough. Hellboy, however, takes this experience to a new level. The power increase to 465 hp and a torque output of 550 Nm do their part to liven things up, the engine is far more eager and the whole car seems to have a penchant for speed. Thanks to the new, pressure-monitoring and self-adjusting exhaust system with butterfly valves, it’s perfectly possible to keep things quiet and comfortable – but where’s the fun in that? The newly developed header-back stainless-steel exhaust system features high-performance catalytic converters, high-flow mufflers and new tail pipes. As a welcome side-effect, the new system is about 35 kg (77 kb) lighter than the factory setup. Using two round exhaust tips struck us as a little unimaginative, which is why our interpretation features a billet aluminum, ceramic-coated and heat-resistant tail pipe that doesn’t just look great on its own, it also integrates very well with the new carbon fiber rear skirt. Rounding off the engine modifications are an ECU recalibration tuned on the dyno and a set of high-flow air filters.

Aerodynamics: The newly developed carbon fiber front skirt with integrated daytime running lights also features enlarged air intakes for improved cooling. The new carbon fiber front lip increases downforce and the elegant side skirts add to the car’s side profile. A new carbon fiber rear skirt along with the diffuser and fins, new side mirrors and fender vents enhance the vehicle’s aerodynamics and looks. An old classic instead of a large wing: a ducktail spoiler, reminiscent of the legendary Carrera RS, completes the picture.

‚Less is more’ was the guiding principle, especially since improved performance and a higher top speed were the focus of this build. The aerodynamic pieces were designed to be compatible with all Panamera versions, be it the V6, V8 or Turbo.

Suspension: A lot of power requires a lot of tire. To improve the car’s handling and traction, we employed ultra-lightweight forged 21 in. wheels. The front wheels measure 9.5 x 21 and use 265/35 ZR 21 tires, the rears are 11 x 21 with 305/30 ZR 21 tires. An electronic lowering module that can bring the body up to 30 mm closer to the ground can be fitted on request.

Interior: Hellboy’s visual impact would be lacking without a suitably exquisite interior, which is why edo competition has upgraded the cabin in a number of ways. New steering wheels, center and shifter consoles, pedals, seats or custom upholstery work, the possibilities are endless.

Verdict: Definitely straight from hell!
