2011 Subaru Impreza STI Rally Car

Subaru Rally Team USA unveiled its new 2011 Impreza WRX STI rally cars to journalists in dramatic fashion at the Pala Raceway in Pala, California. The team provided full speed ride-alongs to journalists during practice for the ESPN Summer X Games 16. Travis Pastrana, Dave Mirra and new teammate, European Rallycross Champion Sverre Isachsen, demonstrated that they were ready for the SuperRally X Game competitions, being held at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Saturday, July 31st.

“The team has worked very hard to get these vehicles ready for the X Games,” said Pastrana. “The competition is going to be tough but I am confident that our STIs will be the cars to beat.”

The team’s technical partner, Vermont SportsCar, first began with a stock 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI right off the showroom floor. The car’s interior was then stripped bare and the shell lightened then fully seam welded for added strength. A multipoint roll cage, manufactured from T45 steel, was then welded into place.

Major differences from the stock STI include the addition of a competition fuel cell — which keeps race fuel contained within a flexible Kevlar bag tank — and lightweight carbon/Kevlar RECARO SPA ProRacer competition seats (w/HANS- Head and Neck Restraint System). Other interior additions include a custom STI dashboard, carbon fiber door panels, a Coralba C-Giant Rally Odometer, and an onboard Fire Suppression System.

The stock dampers are swapped out for heavy-duty rally dampers made by EXE-TC competition suspension. The rally dampers are fully adjustable and are built to take the abuse that off-road gravel rallying entails. Under the hood sits a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled STI engine running VP Racing fuel and producing in excess of 500 horsepower and 560 lb/ft of torque (running with 45mm restrictor for X Games). The clutch is a high performance-racing clutch provided by EXedy. Launch control, a turbo anti-lag system and a hydraulic handbrake are just a few of the features at the driver’s disposal.

A 5-speed, close-ratio dog-engagement gearbox is used, which allows Subaru Rally Team USA drivers to shift without depressing the clutch. The DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) is similar to the system in a stock STI street car, but with a competition ECU for the differential, which allows for greater control of the torque delivery between all four wheels.

The exterior of the car remains close to stock, with the simple addition of mud flaps and a 1/4-inch aluminum skid plate. A roof-mounted carbon fiber air scoop aids in cooling the cockpit and the stock rear wing is replaced with a larger vertically slotted wing, which greatly improves down force to the rear of the car, even as it slides sideways. Lastly, auxiliary HID driving lights, made by Vision-X and housed in carbon fiber light pod, are fitted for night rallying.

“Learning a new car can be a challenge,” Isachsen said, “but having seen the result of the Subaru team’s preparations and practiced in my STI, I am very much looking forward to driving in the X Games SuperRally. Though the ERC (European Rally Championship) is somewhat different from SuperRally, I think my experience will place me in a competitive position for this event.”

The SRT USA will again compete in the Rally Car competition, which they have won 9 out of the 13 possible medals in the past 4 years. The event features two rally cars at a time running on a stadium based parallel course. New for this year X Games will debut SuperRally, which is based on the European Rallycross. SuperRally features direct head-to-head competition with four cars at a time on a tight dirt course within the massive LA Coliseum, in downtown Los Angeles. The new format should prove especially exciting for America fans as the rally cars will bump, jump and slide together in a furious sprint of just a few short laps.

Subaru.com/Rally will post daily updates on the progress of Subaru Rally Team USA throughout X Games weekend.

2011 Subaru Impreza STI Sedan Nurburgring Lap Record – Video

Posted by: eauto | Comments Comments Off

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, today released footage covering an advanced research and development project carried out at the Nurburgring’s racetrack in Germany, using a 2011MY Subaru WRX STI 4-door (sedan) test vehicle. Subaru has been using the world’s toughest Nordschleife course since 1992 for advanced R & D as well as tests of the WRX and WRX STI models. The movie uploaded on the Subaru Global Site http://www.subaru-global.com/home.html features this year’s challenge. It is presented as a highlight of Subaru’s persistent effort to stretch vehicle performance to unprecedented levels.

The concept of the 2011MY WRX STI is “The Fastest WRX STI Ever”. At Subaru, the phrase “Fastest” refers to more than just top speed or maximum engine output. It implies driving with confidence. The WRX STI can only be taken to its “fastest ever” performance when it provides the driver with total driving control with confidence. Major upgrades to the 2011MY WRX STI focused on the chassis and suspension set-up. Tests at the Nurburgring demonstrated the supreme overall dynamics and linear behavior. Tommi Mäkinen, the legendary four-time World Rally Champion, piloted the test vehicle for the challenge. He commented, “The car was controllable with precise and faithful handling even on tricky corners. I could easily predict the car’s behavior. That is exactly what Subaru is offering, confidence”. As a result, the 2011MY WRX STI test vehicle recorded 7’55’’00, Subaru’s fastest lap time ever, which is 4 seconds faster than the previous fastest time recorded in 2004. The 2011MY WRX STI 4-door will go on sale world-wide from this summer. Upgrades to the 4-door version will be carried over to the 5-door (hatchback) model.

Subaru WRX STI

Since its introduction in 1994, the continuous evolution and development of the WRX STI is propelled by the strong support and expectations of thousands of enthusiastic customers and motorsports fans all over the world. These loyal customers strongly support Subaru’s fun-to-drive compact vehicle with superb performance through its unique power train, and unique combination of turbo-charged Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system.

Subaru persists in its philosophy of developing the ultimate driver’s car and embodying the essence of total driving control, from ordinary to extreme driving conditions. The Symmetrical AWD is the core technology to enhance such values in Subaru vehicles. With this philosophy in mind, Subaru’s performance icon, the WRX STI, received a full model change in 2007 to boast not only higher and exhilarating performance but also handling control. The controlled manner and accurate handling response will provide full confidence to the driver in all driving conditions. Even the most demanding drivers will feel they own an extraordinary driving machine. As Subaru’s performance flagship, the WRX STI defines Subaru’s view of AWD Sport.

Concept of 2011MY WRX STI

Based on the concept of “The Fastest WRX STI Ever”, the 2011MY was developed to deliver the maximum performance. Since the first generation WRX STI, the model has been developed to enhance its superior high performance with safety in all road conditions. The 2011MY WRX STI was tested to further refine its nature of a performance car in specific and severe conditions and on the circuits as well, including the Nurburgring racetrack. At Subaru, the phrase “Fastest” does not simply refer to the maximum top speed or engine output. It must come from the confidence a driver can get even on the limit. That confidence is derived from the linearity of the vehicle response to a driver’s input. The enhanced suspension improves precise handling and stability, offering predictable vehicle characteristics. Consequently, the 2011MY WRX STI delivers evolved total driving control in addition to ultra high performance.

Key enhancement for 2011MY

The 2011MY WRX STI further refined its “total driving control” ability by totally reviewed suspension system and lowered overall height. That enables drivers to control the car according to their intentions with improved, superior handling performance. Road holding capability was also improved, thus the driver can drive the car with complete trust in its cornering performance at high speed. In order to maximize the on-road performance, the 4-door sedan version was newly added in the line-up from the 2011MY. Its wide and low shape and large rear spoiler will surely appeal to enthusiasts.

For 2011MY, the overall suspension setup was revised to further improve accuracy and handling response, maneuverability, and road holding capability. In the front suspension, the rear-end arm bushes were changed to a pillow-ball type which is first ever adopted in the Subaru production models. This drastically improves toe stiffness as well as lateral stiffness in order to provide its evolved handling performance that is even more faithful to the driver’s steering control. The specifications of the sub-frame bushings of the rear suspension were also changed to improve toe and camber stiffness, resulting in increased vehicle responsiveness and road hugging capability. Specialized tuning of the damping force of both front and rear dampers provides secure road-holding ability. Changes to specifications of the front and rear coil springs, and stabilizers greatly improve roll stiffness. Due to those suspension refinements, the vehicle height was decreased by 5 mm for lower center of gravity to increase maximum lateral-G.

Nurburgring for Subaru

Subaru has a history of advanced research and development at the Nurburgring. Its constant challenges started in late 1980’s for the evaluation test of suspensions and tyres for the first generation Legacy. In 1992 Subaru first tested the Impreza WRX there. Since then, the Impreza WRX STI test vehicles have been running the 20.8 km (12.9 miles) Nordschleife course in the Nurburgring, which is well known as the most difficult racetrack in the world with more than 160 turns, and with 300 m (984 ft.) difference in altitude. The Nurburgring is a toughest yet ultimate proving ground for all the auto manufacturers. As Subaru understands that all road conditions around the world are condensed in this racetrack, it has chosen the Nurburgring for many years in the development of the WRX STI in order to offer sheer excitement and unique driving feeling as a distinctive “Road Sport Model”. Fastest driving at the track requires a totally-balanced superior vehicle performance. Testing the vehicle at the Nurburgring also proves Subaru’s distinctive performance underpinned by its consistent development philosophy: Subaru pursues enjoyable, reliable, safe and secure driving with high performance. And that will certainly lead to driving with confidence.

History of development

The first challenge took place with the Impreza WRX test vehicle in 1992. Subaru engineers were all stunned at the severe characteristics of the course. The front part of the vehicle was heavily stressed especially on severe ups and downs. Subaru engineers fully realized insufficient abilities of brakes and suspensions, and learned the importance of further enhancement of the rigidity of the front. The vehicle, nevertheless, marked a lap time at 8’28’’93, thanks to its light weight body and excellent stability by Subaru’s authentic Symmetrical AWD system.

After the first introduction of WRX STI version in 1994, the test vehicle of WRX STI version III was tested at the course in 1996, marking 8’10’’75, 18 seconds faster than the 1992 recorded time. The engine output was increased with improved turbo charger and inter-cooler. To meet higher engine output, the transmission and brake system were also refined. Especially 4-piston front and 2-piston rear brake calipers were newly adopted, on the basis of the past testing experiences at the track. This enhancement of brake system eventually led to the adoption of brembo brake system.

The second generation WRX STI, introduced in 2000, featured new items which further enhanced driving performance: 225/45ZR17 tyres, 6-speed manual transmission, new engine with variable valve timing control mechanisms and brembo brake system. The model also dramatically improved its body rigidity to enhance collision safety performance. However, this resulted in the weight increase and the lap time of this model did not meet Subaru’s expectations.

In 2002 the WRX STI received a face-lift with superior aerodynamics, a finely-managed AWD system and new engine performance. The equal-length exhaust and Subaru’s first twin-scroll turbocharger increased the maximum output and torque. The newly-adopted auto mode in driver’s control center differential system optimizes torque distributions between front and rear axles. Thanks to those advanced technologies, this test vehicle recorded 8’06’’59.

The WRX STI evolved again in 2004. Wheel hubs, rims and tyre width were enlarged. Helical type was newly adopted in the front limited slip differential gear to improve stability at cornering. An undercover helped improvement of aerodynamics. Enlarged inter-cooler increased maximum torque. Mainly due to the enhancement of chassis performance, the test vehicle finally broke the 8-minute barrier at 7’59’’41.

The third generation WRX STI was redesigned in 2007. One of big topics in this model was the adoption of the totally new chassis system, “Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept”. Newly developed double wishbone rear suspension offered superior road-holding ability by optimizing the geometry, including toe and camber angles and by regulating the lift motion. Subaru opted for the new 5-door package with a clear vision of what package is most appropriate to be competitive in the rally field, and what Subaru believes the ideal road sports car should be. Three key elements, “traction”, “response” and “stability”, were enhanced by its new chassis and package. Rainy conditions made the tests incomplete for the lap time comparable to the previous records.

The 2010 Challenge

Development of the 2011MY WRX STI focused on improved dynamics and precise handling with every aspect tested under extreme operating conditions including the toughest Nurburgring racetrack. To prove the development concept, “The Fastest WRX STI Ever”, Subaru chose the new 4-door sedan body for 2010 testing. Based on the 2011MY model, some potential future model items were added to this test vehicle, since Subaru positioned this challenge as one of stages in advanced research and development. Subaru evaluated the model’s performance, considering future product planning of the WRX STI.

The final challenge took place in April at the Nordschleife course. Subaru believes suspension performance is essential for high speed cornering with confidence. Therefore, the refinement of suspensions and chassis were mainly focused on this challenge as well as the development of 2011MY WRX STI. During testing, the car showed faster cornering speed. As a result, the test vehicle recorded 7’55’’00, the fastest lap time ever recorded in a Subaru, proving its development concept, “The Faster WRX STI Ever”.

Subaru is fully committed to offer enjoyable, reliable and exciting driving with confidence to customers in its vehicle development philosophy. The aim of using the Nurburgring for Subaru is not to mark the fastest lap time but to develop vehicles that customers can drive faster yet safely with confidence even under extreme road conditions as typified by the Nurburgring. Further refined suspensions and new sedan body of the 2011MY WRX STI contributed much to this result, and this learning was accurately fed back to the production models.

Ideal driving on the Nurburgring racetrack is beyond measure by figures. It relies on experience and inspiration by the driver, too. “The 2011MY WRX STI test car balances excellent stability and handling performance at a high level, thanks to its refined suspensions”, explained Tommi Makinen. The legendary four-time World Rally Champion piloted the car. He has also been a longtime supporter of Subaru since he took the first driver’s seat of Subaru World Rally Team in 2002. “The car was really controllable with precise and faithful handling even on tricky corners. I could easily predict a next behavior of the car, that is, I confirmed its evolved total driving control ability. Subaru’s renowned Symmetrical AWD system also greatly contributed to this performance. The outstanding achievement is not only a tribute to Subaru’s continued and earnest efforts, but also an evidence of confidence in driving a Subaru”.

For Subaru, the Nurburgring has been a place for self-discipline in its vehicle development. Subaru believes “Persistency is Power” and will continue to use the track to further pursue the development of vehicles which provides emotion, excitement and confidence to customers.

“The continuous evolution and development of the 2011 Subaru Impreza STI is driven by the strong, loyal and vocal support from thousands of enthusiastic owners of this exciting high-performance vehicle,” said Tom Doll, executive vice president and COO of Subaru of America, Inc. “The 2011 4-door 2011 Subaru Impreza STI will expand the appeal of this iconic performance model to a wider range of driving enthusiasts.”

New Designs for 2011

In front, the 2011 WRX STI models feature sharpened bumper corners and wider, blacked-out fog lamp nacelles to accentuate the “wide and low” profile. A jutting lip spoiler with three-dimensional detailing emphasizes the cars’ sporty intent. The newly designed front grille with black base and blacked-out Subaru wing highlights the headlights’ shape to give the entire front end a more powerful appearance, accentuated by larger grille and bumper intake openings.

For the 4-door models, newly designed wider rear fenders are stretched out on the side beyond the tail lamps, accentuating a look of power and stability. The new design details contribute to an improved drag coefficient.

New Chassis Tuning for 2011

The Subaru WRX STI was already a highly optimized performance machine. Specific chassis tuning. Aluminum front lower L-arms reduce unsprung vehicle weight. Major chassis tuning changes include a lowered ride height and new pillow-ball bushings in front and stiffer bushings for the rear subframe that supports the double-wishbone suspension – these improve camber and toe stiffness. Both the front and rear suspension systems employ higher-rate springs and thicker front and rear stabilizer bars than the 2010 model: 21 mm vs. 20 mm in front and 19 mm vs. 18 mm in rear. Spring rates have increased by 15.6 percent in front and 53 percent in the rear.

New standard 18-inch aluminum wheels feature high-luster paint and weigh 17.6 lbs. less than the previous standard wheels. The optional 18 x 8.5-in. BBS® forged aluminum-alloy wheels, which further reduce unsprung vehicle weight, are highlighted by silver high-luster paint for 2011.

Exclusive to the 2011 Subaru Impreza STI, the Brembo Performance Brake System uses ventilated 4-wheel Super Sport anti-lock (ABS) disc brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Super Sport ABS can control the braking forces at each rear wheel independently, which optimizes braking ability during hard cornering to help reduce understeer.

The Ultimate Performance Subaru

The 2011 WRX STI continues as the ultimate-performance Subaru with its high-boost 305-hp turbocharged/intercooled 4-cyl. Boxer engine and 6-speed manual transmission. The 2011 Subaru Impreza STI offers superior driving performance befitting a sports model and is Subaru’s performance flagship. The 2011 Subaru Impreza STI also offers high levels of safety thanks to the Horizontally-Opposed (Boxer) turbo engine serving as a core of the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system with its excellent weight balance and a low center of gravity.

Developed under the concept of “The Fastest WRX STI Ever”, the 2011 model has achieved even more advanced driving performance due to a finely tuned suspension. To attain such superior performance, the model underwent repeated testing at the Nurburgring track in Germany as well as in Japan, which served to refine the essential nature of the car as a true driver’s car that offers “total driving control” with a high level of cornering performance, secure and supreme sure handling, and overall vehicle stability.

New 4-Door Sedan

In order to further pursue the performance expected of a road sports model, a 4-door model has been added to the lineup to provide a new Subaru AWD performance sedan.

New Wide-Body WRX 4- and 5-Door

Adopting the same wide body as the 2011 Subaru Impreza STI, the Impreza WRX features wider tread and tire widths which, together with a finely tuned suspension, provide remarkable improvements to stability and road-holding performance when driving at high speeds. The 4-door and 5-door models have been thoroughly upgraded in terms of styling and driving performance for enhanced product appeal.

3. Mechanisms (For both 4-door and 5-door models)

• The overall suspension setup has been completely revised and the vehicle height lowered by 5 mm in order to provide high-precision handling that allows a driver to accurately power through lines exactly as required.
• A new aluminum lower arm has been designed for the front suspension, while the rear arm bushes have been changed to a pillow-ball type. These work to improve toe and tread rigidity in order to provide handling performance that is even more faithful to the driver’s steering control.
• The specifications of the sub-frame bushings of the rear suspension have been changed to improve the toe and camber rigidity, resulting in increased vehicle responsiveness and road hugging capability.
• Specialised tuning of the damping force of both front and rear dampers provides secure road-holding ability. Changes to specifications of the front and rear coil springs, and stabilizers have greatly improved roll rigidity.

2010 Cosworth Subaru Impreza STI CS400 First Detail

Posted by: eauto | Comments Comments Off

The result of one of the most eagerly anticipated automotive collaborations in recent times is heading fast towards Subaru dealerships. The Cosworth Subaru Impreza STI CS400 officially goes on sale in June, and is set to offer performance-car fans the thrill of a lifetime.

Subaru has confirmed the car will boast an impressive 400PS (395bhp) at 5,750rpm, sufficient to dispatch the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.7 seconds (compared to 300PS / 296bhp at 6,000rpm,and 5.2 seconds for the standard Impreza WRX STI). This ensures the Cosworth Subaru Impreza STI CS400 will be one of the most accelerative all-wheel-drive hatchbacks ever.

Subaru also reports that the Cosworth Subaru Impreza STI CS400 will feature a bespoke brake package – with six-pot callipers and 355mm discs at the front – developed in partnership with AP Racing, giving the car prodigious stopping power. Coventry-based AP Racing is a leading supplier of brake and clutch components to teams in the Formula One Championship and the World Rally Championship, as well as to leading supercar brands including Bugatti.

A wide range of further upgrades have been made to the suspension, exhaust and to the donor Impreza’s exterior and interior styling. An exclusive, limited edition run of 75 Cosworth Subaru Impreza STI CS400 will be produced, and full details of pricing and technical specification will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Subaru has adopted a different strategy than usual for a new special edition model based on the Impreza WRX STI. Usually, the Japanese automaker tries to get the maximum performance out of the Impreza WRX STI when it comes to releasing a new special edition model. Well, this time, it is all about the styling.

The newest project is named Subaru Impreza WRX STI A-Line Type S and it is based on the Subaru Impreza WRX STI A-Line which was launched about one year ago, in the beginning of the year 2009. It is important to mention that the Subaru Impreza WRX STI A-Line Type S just like other special edition WRX STI models are JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) exclusive, so people who live in Europe or in the USA will not be getting their hands on these cars.

Returning to the Subaru Impreza WRX STI A-Line Type S, it will get its power from a 2.5 liter turbocharged engine that is capable of developing 300 horsepower while the powertrain is completed by a five speed automatic transmission with paddle shifts.

Some of the most important features of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI A-Line Type S include gold colored brake calipers, Recaro seats treated in Alcantara and leather, new lightweight alloy wheels in a gunmetal gray finish while the leather steering wheel and the door panels are accented by contrasting red stitching.

The Subaru Impreza WRX STI A-Line Type S will hit the Japanese market for a price of 3.255.000 Yen which is the equivalent of 24.400 Euro or 34.800 dollars.

2010 SPT Subaru Impreza WRX STI in Detail

2010 SPT Subaru Impreza WRX STI

2010 SPT Subaru Impreza WRX STI

The drivetrain in the WRX STI by SPT is essentially stock, which means a 2.5 liter DOHC, 16 valve, turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder Subaru Boxer® engine with Dual Active Valve Control System. Backed by a 6-speed close ratio manual transmission, it gets power to the road via Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD), limited slip helical front differential and TORSEN® rear differential.

The engine remains stock, including 14.7 PSI max. boost. An SPT exhaust system boosts horsepower to 315 hp @ 6,000 RPM (up from the stock 305), while peak torque remains stock at 290 lb.-ft. @ 4,000 RPM. There is also an SPT turbo heat shield.

For that extra dose of style under the hood, the car features an SPT billet oil cap v2.0 and SPT billet battery hold down v2.0; an STI front lip spoiler and SPT exhaust finishers complete the look.

The stock WRX STI is already a master of the curves; the WRX STI by SPT ups the handling ante with readily available accessories: 19 x 8.5-in. Prodrive® GT2 wheels are finished in Glitter Gold and wear Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 245/35R19 performance tires. Suspension is tweaked with STI performance springs, an SPT strut tower brace and an SPT lower chassis brace.

Interior appointments and electronics are geared to what the average enthusiast can afford and use. So, you won’t find half a dozen 10-inch LCDs scattered around the interior. An SPT boost gauge, a media hub digital music integration system and an auto-dimming mirror with transflective display and HomeLink® transmitter, are all available from the SPT catalog. Final touches include an STI shift knob and all-weather floor mats (because Subaru drivers aren’t afraid of the weather.)
