2011 Volkswagen Touareg with 410hp by JE DESIGN

Posted by: eauto | Comments Comments Off

The new Touareg grew four centimeters in length in comparison to its predecessor. But only JE DESIGN enhances the width of this large VW as well. The new JE DESIGN Widebody-Kit in combination with the aluminum wheels and lower suspension setting bestows the SUV from Wolfsburg with significantly higher road dominance and an increased overtake prestige. The increased performance honours the wide construction’s promise in an impressive manner.

The JE DESIGN Widebody-Kit provides a completely new style for the Touareg, with a new sports radiator grill, front spoiler, front and back wheel arch kit, rear apron insert, roof spoiler and rear hatch blend for 4998 Euro including VAT (non-committal price recommendation). All of the components are fitted precisely, manufactured from Polyurethane (PU) and will be delivered already primed. The new additional headlights also provide the large Volkswagen with an even more unique front view.

Not only the components’ perfect alignment, but also the ability to combine the components with all models of this series speaks for the engineering of the customizer from Leingarten, Germany. The widebody kit is developed to accommodate the Touareg standard version, but is also precisely fitted to accommodate designer packages „Chrome & Style“ as well as „Terrain-Style“. The pivot-trailer hitch can also be used as well as the different Volkswagen-muffler tips – regardless whether round or trapezium shaped – the JE DESIGN Widebody-Kit is designed to support it.

Alternatively, the JE DESIGN offers dual exhaust pipes for 595 Euro, which channels the exhaust fumes left and right through round bevelled stainless steel pipes in a diameter of 90 millimetres.

However, JE DESIGN is not limited to the visual transformation of the Touareg. Thanks to optimised engine management, the performance of the 4.2-liter TDI-engine has increased to 410 hp (302 kW) vs. the previous 340 hp (250 kW) and the maximum torque takes a leap from 800 to 930 Newton metres. Therefore the acceleration of this more than two ton vehicle from 0-100 kph only takes 5.4 instead of 5.8 seconds and the top speed now no longer ends at 242 but at 269 kph instead. The price of 2999 Euro already includes a one year warranty for the engine, the turbo charger, the transmission and the power train and can be extended to two years for an additional 199 Euro.

To ensure the newfound power is utilised to its full capacity on the road, the pneumatic electronic suspension lowering module will bring the vehicles 35 millimetres lower to the ground for a price of 1428 Euro.

As a result, the new aluminium wheels appear especially impressive. JE DESIGN equips the Wolfsburg-vehicle with the SUV-Select design, 10×12 inch aluminium wheels, back and front. For a total of 409 Euro the 30 millimetre wheel spacers on the front axel and 40 millimetres wheel spacers on the back axle additionally ensure that the wheel housing is optimally completed. For individual coordination, the wheels are available in four different finishes: shadow silver with a polished front surface, matte black with a matte silver front surface, graphite shiny silver with polished rim and matte graphite silver with polished rim. However, custom painted wheels are also available without problem so that each Touareg can become a customized vehicle. JE DESIGN offers the complete wheel package for 5190 Euro; single wheels are available for 690 Euro each.

The complete JE DESIGN upgrade, including assembly, paint and TÜV- registration is available for 19,750 Euro.

Of course, JE DESIGN will provide the respective TÜV-assessments for each component, so the specified assessments can be added to the vehicle registration without problem. Additionally, despite the performance increase, the Touareg is still in compliance with emission regulations and therefore eliminates problems during the emission control inspection.

Additional information regarding JE DESIGN’s extensive tuning program is available per telephone at +49(0)7131/203 84-0 and on the internet at www.je-design.de/en

2011 Volkswagen CrossTouran Unveiled

Posted by: eauto | Comments Comments Off

It’s the positive lifestyle statement of the summer: the new CrossTouran! Following the CrossPolo and CrossGolf launched earlier in the year, the CrossTouran now fills the gap in the Cross lifestyle family. Volkswagen’s ‘more extrovert’ compact MPV is now available to order from a starting price of €27,700.

The Touran already follows the new Volkswagen design DNA and impresses externally with a dynamic character line, a new, powerful rear-end design and two-part taillight clusters. However, the CrossTouran traditionally ‘goes one better’ and with its modified bad road kit complete with longer suspension springs it gets 20 millimeters more ground clearance than the standard model.

On top of that comes the mix of 215 tiers at the front and 235s at the back, both on 17-inch alloy wheels. Thanks to its striking exterior elements the new CrossTouran is also instantly perceived as an autonomous model. The widened wheel arches form a unit with the side sills, which are drawn right up into the doors. It is also given a sporty character by the differentiated front and rear bumpers and the black grained protective strips on the doors.

In addition to a specific design the autonomous ‘Cross’ brand also stands – like ‘GTI’ and ‘R’ – for a specially designed set of features. As well as the alloy wheels, bodywork kit and bad road suspension, the new CrossTouran boasts added features aplenty: a roof rack in matt aluminum, decorative trim in stainless steel look, electric windows front and rear, extra comfortable seats in the front with height adjustment and lumbar support, leather steering wheel plus leather trim on gearlever knob and handbrake and a special seat cover pattern.

Through the sum of its special features the CrossTouran glistens with Wolfsburg virtues: interior comfort and convenience (40 storage bins and optional third seating row), driving fun and environmental awareness. For instance, as well as with the familiar TSI and TDI engines the new CrossTouran is now also available with the particularly efficient and environmentally friendly ‘EcoFuel’ natural gas engine. Fuel consumption when driving on natural gas is 4.8 kilograms per 100 kilometres, which equates to CO2 emissions per kilometre of 133 grams. The additional natural gas tanks are located beneath the floor, so that the vehicle’s cargo capacity of up to 1,989 litres is not affected.

In total CrossTouran customers have a wide array of TSI, TDI and natural gas engines to choose from, ranging in power from 77 kW to 125 kW (105 to 170 PS). This lifestyle-oriented all-rounder – complete with all visual and technical refinements – can now be ordered in Germany from a starting price of €27,700.

2011 Volkswagen Touran Pricing Announced

Posted by: eauto | Comments Comments Off

The new Volkswagen Touran compact MPV opens for ordering today complete with fresh styling both inside and out, a range of efficient new engines and a starting price of £17,585 RRP on the road. First deliveries are set to take place on 22 September.

Unveiled at the Leipzig Motor Show in April, the new Touran draws on the design language seen on the Polo and new Sharan with a mix of clean lines and a lower, wider appearance than the model it replaces. The changes extend to the front wings, bonnet and front bumper which are joined by new wing mirrors, rear lights and a restyled tailgate and bumper.

Inside the new Touran the entertainment and climate functions have all been revised and a new three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of restyled dials. Fresh trim finishes are also available.

As with the outgoing car, the new Touran’s focus is on versatility, with the ability to carry seven adults with the third row of seats folding flat into the floor. In addition, air conditioning, alloy wheels, roof rails, a CD stereo system, ABS, Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) and six airbags are all fitted as standard. A five-seat option is also available.

The second generation of Park Assist, a system that will also be available on the new Sharan, is offered. Not only does the new system require less space to perform parallel parking manoeuvres, it also allows the Touran to be parked in spaces at 90 degrees to the kerb.

Fitted for the first time to the Touran is the advanced new 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine. Despite a modest displacement of 1,197 cc, the turbocharged unit develops 105 PS and 129 lbs ft of torque while returning 44.1 mpg on the combined cycle and emitting 149 g/km of CO2. In BlueMotion Technology form, complete with Stop/Start and battery regeneration, the 1.2-litre TSI engine is capable of returning 47.9 mpg while emitting an estimated 139 g/km of CO2.

A further petrol and four diesel engines will be available, ranging in power from 90 to 170 PS. Three trim levels – S, SE and Sport – will be available with BlueMotion Technology variants being offered with each. The full range of engines and prices are detailed on the following page or can be accessed by clicking on the following link: http://primary.newspress.co.uk/LINKS/01-VW_Downloads/New_Touran_price_list_02-08-10.pdf

2011 Volkswagen Caddy Unveiled

Posted by: eauto | Comments Comments Off

The new generation Caddy

Launches autumn 2010 with more fuel-efficient engines, new design, added safety and extra functionality

-New TDI and TSI engines reduce fuel consumption, emissions and cost
-New front section bears new Volkswagen design DNA
-Revised interior with greater functionality and added class
-New generation ESP as standard on all models

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is introducing a new generation of the top-selling Caddy. The compact van with its practical rear sliding door system has been enhanced in every area. Six new TDI and TSI engines with up to 21% lower fuel consumption, a completely restructured model range, a more precise, fresh front design in the style of the new Amarok and current T5 generation (Transporter, Multivan etc.) and an upgraded interior, now with a removable second row of seats, plus further reduced maintenance costs make the new Caddy one of the most innovative urban delivery vehicles and compact vans available. Globally the third generation Caddy sold around 800,000 units within just 6 years (2004 to 2009). The new Caddy now promises a dynamic continuation of this success story.

The new Caddy will be the first urban delivery vehicle and compact van in this class to be equipped as standard with ESP on all models. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is thus rigorously pursuing its overriding safety strategy of protecting driver and passengers in the best way possible. The new Caddy will also be the only vehicle in this market segment available with the option of an efficient 6 or 7-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG) and Hill-Start Assist. Naturally, the new generation of this best-selling vehicle is once again available with an extended wheelbase (Maxi) and – uniquely in this market segment – with (4MOTION) 4-wheel drive. 4MOTION being available for the Caddy and Caddy Maxi.

For the first time the second row of seats is completely removable on all models. For the 5-seater Caddy this produces – loaded to the roof – a cargo capacity of up to 3,030 litres; for the Caddy Maxi the figure is 3,880 litres. Of interest to tradesmen and service providers will be the fact that if the Caddy Maxi is fitted with the Flexi-Seat Plus pack, the cargo space (on the front-seat passenger’s side) is made over 3 metres longer and cargo capacity increases to a best-in-class 4.7m3. The new Caddy can also be ordered as an option with a bench-style third seating row (standard in the Caddy Maxi Trendline and Comfortline) and as such can seat up to seven people.

Six new high-tech engines: The Caddy’s new petrol and diesel engines deliver extreme efficiency (all complying with the Euro 5 emission limits). All of them are completely new to the range and equipped with turbocharging and direct fuel injection.

Turbo diesel engines: The turbocharged four-valve (TDI) diesel engines deliver 55 kW / 75 PS, 75 kW / 102 PS, 81 kW / 110 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS respectively. All of the TDIs now work with very quiet and efficient common rail direct injection. All TDIs are also linked as standard to a diesel particulate filter. The 102 PS TDI can be ordered as an option with a 7-speed DSG. For the more powerful 140 PS TDI there is also a specially designed 6-speed DSG available. The 81 kW TDI is exclusively available as a 4MOTION model with four-wheel drive.

BlueMotion: The most fuel-efficient model in the range is now the new Caddy 1.6 TDI with BlueMotion Technology (75 kW / 102 PS). Average consumption: 4.9 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (panel van). That equates to a CO2 emission figure of no more than 129 g/km and fuel consumption of 0.6 litres less than the already frugal outgoing model with BlueMotion Technology. This new fuel consumption figure produces a range of 1,176 kilometres on one tank. Fuel costs thus go down to just €6.35 per 100 kilometres (based on €1.245 per litre of diesel, as in May 2010 in Germany).
Alternatively the 75 PS TDI can also be ordered as a BlueMotion Technology variant. Every Caddy equipped with BlueMotion Technology has a Start/Stop system and an automatic battery regeneration system for utilising the energy that would otherwise be lost during braking. With this system, whenever the driver lifts his or her foot from the accelerator or concertedly brakes, the generator’s voltage gets increased and is used to top up the battery. That reduces the load on the engine and thus lowers consumption.

Petrol engines: Two new TSI petrol engines are being used in the Caddy. Technical features of both high-tech engines include a turbocharger and direct fuel injection. The extremely fuel-efficient four cylinder engines develop 63 kW / 86 PS and 77 kW / 105 PS respectively from a cubic capacity of 1.2 litres. Just how efficient the engines are is shown, for example, by the 105-PS version with an average fuel consumption of only 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres (figures for the Caddy panel van; equivalent to 154 g/km CO2). Compared to the outgoing model consumption has thus been reduced by 1.6 litres or, as mentioned above, 21 percent. Another frugal and extremely efficient petrol engine for the Caddy and Caddy Maxi is the natural gas version carried over from the previous generation, the 2.0 EcoFuel (CNG), which delivers 80 kW / 109 PS.

Four new model lines: The Caddy model range has also been reconfigured. This relates both to a standard upgrade of equipment levels, to new interior materials, steering wheels and other equipment details as well as a restructuring of the model lines. The Caddy remains available as panel and ‘kombi’ variants, which at around 70% make up the lion’s share of the sales volume (panel van with no rear side windows specifically for tradesmen and service providers). For customers with more discerning demands in terms of specification, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has completely reorganised the equipment levels. Here the three available model lines are now the Startline, Trendline and Comfortline. The Trendline version replaces the Caddy Life and the top Comfortline version supersedes the successful special ‘Style’ model. The Startline has been newly integrated as an entry-level model. As the new top model there will also be the Comfortline Edition (formerly the Style Edition), with which Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will again be offering a very exclusive version of the Caddy. Also still included in the range is the popular camper van, the Tramper (as both Caddy and Caddy Maxi).

New features: Standard on all versions: new daytime running lights. Optional extras on the new range include adaptive cornering lights (integrated into the front fog lights), roof rack (standard on the Comfortline) and the newly designed RNS 315 radio/navigation system.

Prices for the respective models of the new Caddy – after adjusting for differences in equipment options – are slightly below the levels of the previous generation, starting at €13,595 for the panel van and €14,205 for the Startline, in each case with a 63 kW TSI engine and excluding VAT. The launch of the new Caddy begins at the end of September in Germany and the vehicle will go on sale in almost every other country shortly after that. Dealers in Germany are taking initial orders now.

2010 Volkswagen Golf GTI R by JE DESIGN

Posted by: eauto | Comments Comments Off

Up to now, whoever wanted to get behind the wheel of a 270-hp VW Golf had to invest more than 36,000 Euro in a Golf R . But now JE DESIGN provides the same performance for the Golf GTI. What’s more, the aerodynamics package and the light alloy wheels take care of the individual look, and the new rear silencer provides the sporty sound.

JE DESIGN boosts the Golf VI GTI’s performance by more than a quarter. Instead of 210 hp (155 kW), the 2.0-litre turbo motor now produces a full 270 hp (199 kW). The maximum torque rockets from 280 to 370 Newton metres, and now the Wolfsburg car reaches a top speed of 257 kph, up from its previous 240 kph. From a standing start the JE DESIGN Golf saves half a second and makes it to the 100-kph mark in only 6.4 seconds.

JE DESIGN offers optimisation of the engine control system in their own workshop in Leingarten, Germany or collects the dismantled engine control unit by courier and returns it on the following day. The price of 1549 Euro including VAT even includes a one-year warrantee on the motor, turbo-charger, gearbox and drivetrain. For vehicles less than two years old and which have driven fewer than 100,000 kilometres, an extension for a further year can be arranged for only 199 Euro.

The GTI by JE DESIGN with the self-confident aerodynamics package demonstrates the new performance capability. The new front spoiler with the central, carbon-look spoiler sword is available for as little as 349 Euro. The side skirts for 299 Euro also underline the sporty look and the rear skirt insert in carbon-look for only 249 Euro. On the left and right sides, the trapezoid, stainless steel sports endpipes provide the relevant resonance (899 Euro).

Thanks to the lowering springs for 159 Euro, the Golf sits 35 millimetre closer to the tarmac. Consequently the 8×19-inch, matt black, light alloy wheels Multispoke with the matt silver edge trim look particularly sporty. With size 225/35 high-performance tyres, JE DESIGN offers the complete wheel set for a mere 2930 Euro.

As is normal with JE DESIGN, all components come with a TÜV Certificate so that the modifications can be registered in the vehicle’s documents without further ado.

2010 RDX RaceDesign Volkswagen Scirocco Unveiled

Posted by: eauto | Comments Comments Off

RDX RACEDESIGN makes the sports car for every man even livelier. The complete bodykit improves the dynamic look of the Volkswagen Scirocco (type 13) and converts the decorous VW into a self-confident individualist with a liking for bends.

Straight away the forbidding face of the transformed Scirocco reveals that this is no mere mass-produced car out for a Sunday run. The new headlight covers by RDX RACEDESIGN make the Wolfsburg car look resolutely forwards. The covers are fixed to the headlights with the special glue included and do not need to be inspected by the Technical Control Board TUV. The set is supplied by RDX RACEDESIGN for only 49 Euro including VAT.

It is the RDX front spoiler which is chiefly responsible for the bodykit’s dynamic optical effect. It enhances not only the sporty appearance, but in fact also improves the coupe’s aerodynamics. For 169 Euro a TUV component certificate is included in delivery so that the spoiler can be registered in the vehicle’s documents without further ado.

The side skirts give the impression that the bodywork has been widened, because visually the Scirocco sits lower and squatter on the road. The curved contours and the rear grille inserts underline the wedge look and therefore contribute to the dynamic transformation. The skirt kit which requires no technical registration is available from RDX RACEDESIGN at the low price of 129 Euro.
The diffuser hinted at in the rear bumper extension completes the aerodynamics package. The fine-meshed grating surrounds the exhausts and takes care of the sporty rear view. The rear bumper extension likewise requires no technical registration and is for sale at 199 Euro.

The roof spoiler which elongates the roof line far to the rear leaves no room for doubt about the new sporty character of the RDX Scirocco. All this combines to turn the reserved Volkswagen into a self-confident individualist. The roof spoiler is available from RDX RACEDESIGN for 189 Euro. The corresponding TUV component certificate is of course included in the package.

All components of the new bodykit fit all VW Scirocco models. RDX RACEDESIGN manufactures each part in OEM quality exclusively from PU-ABS thermoplastic. This allows the manufacturer to ensure not only low weight, but also to benefit from the stability and the elasticity of the material. Proof of the high quality, both of the material and the manufacturing, is the two-year warranty which RDX RACEDESIGN gives on all products. Furthermore any buyer is entitled to return his purchase within 14 days without further explanation.

Leading German companies from the automobile industry and the telecommunications and software development sectors are today presenting the results of AKTIV, one of Germany’s most important road safety projects, to Parliamentary State Secretary Peter Hintze. The declared aim of this four-year research initiative launched back in September 2006 is to further enhance active road safety, relieve drivers and harmonise traffic flows. Involved in many of the initiative’s subprojects, Volkswagen AG is an important partner in this research project sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

“Volkswagen has set the goal of developing innovative driver assistance systems for safer and more sustainable mobility. Volkswagen Group Research thus views AKTIV as one of its flagship projects and is striving to transform the project results into production-ready products as quickly as possible,” commented Dr. Jürgen Leohold, Head of Volkswagen Group Research, at today’s wrap-up event in Mendig.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety (“AKTIV-SFR”)

In the “Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety” subproject, Volkswagen is working on a system to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. In the past decades, a great deal of engineering has gone into making new vehicles safer for pedestrians. Specially designed soft bumpers, which significantly reduce injuries, are one particularly noteworthy passive protection measure.

In addition to these passive measures, Volkswagen has also researched active systems providing extra safety. Using cameras and radar sensors installed on the vehicle, the vehicle constantly monitors its surroundings, paying particular attention to pedestrians and cyclists. The sensors enable unprotected road users and their direction of travel to be detected several meters in front of the vehicle. The installed software then analyses the situation, determining whether it is serious or could even result in a collision.

If a critical traffic situation like this is recognised, the vehicle will brake automatically. The objective is to reduce the vehicle’s speed as much as possible to minimise the consequences of the accident or, ideally, to prevent the accident from happening in the first place.

This Volkswagen-developed vehicle goes beyond automatic braking to provide an additional protection system. If the sensor system detects that one of the front corners of the vehicle is about to collide with a pedestrian, a driver steering recommendation will be activated to avoid the collision. In this case, the driver will feel the steering wheel gently turn to swerve around the pedestrian. Although the driver can override the steering recommendation, following the recommendation will ideally prevent the collision.

Integrated Lateral Assistance (“AKTIV-IQF”)

“Lane Assist” is an active lane-keeping assistance system now installed in production vehicles which reduces the number of accidents caused by unintended lane departure. If the vehicle appears to stray from its lane, Lane Assist will gently countersteer the vehicle back onto course. However, since the system is an assistance system only, the driver can override the steering recommendation at all times.

As part of the Integrated Lateral Assistance subproject, Volkswagen Group Research has developed an assistance system that continuously supports the driver in terms of longitudinal and lateral vehicle control. In addition to providing the driver with continuous support, the system’s particular feature is that longitudinal and lateral vehicle control do not work independently of each other. The shared control concept for this system enables the vehicle’s speed to be adapted to the road’s path and the driving situation. GPS tracking and digital map information are applied to generate a predictive vehicle-speed strategy that also takes into account tight bends beyond the surround sensors’ range.

Always looking ahead and continuously working, this assistance system supports drivers at all speeds when driving on motorways and roads in good condition. Since the lateral assistance system takes into account objects in the vehicle’s immediate surroundings, it is also available in traffic congestion or when driving through roadworks.

Driver Awareness and Safety (“AKTIV-FSA”)

The technical elements in a driver assistance system – sensors, actuators, algorithms – are one part of development. The other part is the driver interface. Is the driver capable of understanding and anticipating intervention by the system? Will the driver lose control of the vehicle if the system does not react correctly?

Volkswagen Group Research tackled these questions in the Driver Awareness and Safety subproject. Based on the Integrated Lateral Assistance system described above, it was analysed how the development of safety-relevant driver assistance systems can be systematically supported. Research focused on the system’s user-friendliness and controllability as well as potential long-term changes in driver behaviour. Relevant scenarios and their influencing factors were compiled and analysed in order to determine which systems – for example, driving simulator, vehicle in the loop, or real vehicle – would be most suitable for the testing phase. When analysing the potential of the new assistance systems with regard to gains in safety, it is vital to take a comprehensive view and make sure that the results can be applied to real traffic situations. An empirical study investigating Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) showed that driver assistance systems provide increased convenience and safety even after they have been used for a long period of time.

Situation-Responsive Driving (“AKTIV-STAF”) The Volkswagen Roadworks Pilot – a driver assistance system to avoid traffic congestion

More than 30% of all congestion on the German Autobahn is caused by roadworks. However, research shows that driving behaviour that keeps traffic flowing as smoothly as possible can prevent congestion; for example, this would mean quickly driving through narrow sections of road. Road capacity could generally be increased by about three percent if ten percent of drivers would exhibit a driving style that allows traffic to flow. This in turn would reduce waiting time, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Volkswagen’s Roadworks Pilot is a traffic assistance and information system. It expands the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) system currently available for production vehicles to include an additional function from the area of Traffic Management. In order to promote smooth traffic flow through roadworks, up-to-date information about the route and an appropriate driving strategy are required. The driver is shown information pertaining to the roadworks ahead in a “traffic horizon”, which contains a map preview with traffic information. In order to receive up-to-date traffic information for the area around the roadworks, onboard systems track the vehicle’s route. Using vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, this information is transmitted to communication installations known as roadside units, which are set up at various points along the road and collect data from passing vehicles. Roadside units analyse vehicle data using an algorithm developed by Volkswagen in order to generate information such as the number of road lanes, their paths, and the precise traffic situation. This information is then transmitted to vehicles following behind in the form of a dynamic local map. At the same time, the “Roadworks Pilot” implements the driving strategy in the vehicle, providing driving recommendations or automatically controlling distance and speed. What makes this system innovative is the following: Depending on the traffic situation, the vehicle approaches potential traffic congestion with the appropriate caution. It then passes through the narrowed section of road at constant speed, without changing lanes and at a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to prevent waves of congestion from forming. Finally, the vehicle quickly accelerates back to normal speed at the end of the roadworks. This enables any congestion present to clear up better.

Volkswagen thus shows that driver assistance systems cannot only enhance safety and convenience, but also help prevent congestion and reduce CO2 emissions.

General details on the AKTIV research project

AKTIV is the acronym used for the research initiative “Adaptive and cooperative technologies for intelligent transport”. AKTIV has an overall budget of €60 million, the majority of which is provided by the research partners. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology is contributing €25 million, while the Federal Ministry of Education and Research is providing €2.1 million. The research initiative itself is divided into two main projects in which Volkswagen is heavily involved: “Assistance Systems / Active Safety” (“AS”) and “Traffic Management” (“VM”). In addition to these main areas, the initiative also includes the project “Cooperative Cars” (“CoCar”).

With an investment volume of €37.5 million, “AS” is the largest project within this research initiative. Besides “Integrated Lateral Assistance” (“IQF”), this project also investigates the four topics of “Active Hazard Braking” (“AGB”), “Intersection Assistance” (“KAS”), “Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety” (“SFR”) and “Driver Awareness and Safety” (“FSA”).

About €18 million are available in the “Traffic Management” project. In addition to other topics, Situation-Responsive Driving (“STAF”) is the focus of intensive research in this project.

The partners of AKTIV are as follows: Adam Opel GmbH, AUDI AG, AZT Automotive GmbH, BMW Group, Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), Continental, Daimler AG, Ericsson, Ford Forschungszentrum Aachen GmbH, Hessian Road and Traffic Authority (HLSV), Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft des Saarlandes – University of Applied Sciences, IBEO, ifak e.V. “Today marks the beginning of a new era for Volkswagen and for Jetta,” said Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “The all-new 2011 Jetta is a class-up driving experience with the kind of styling, design and power under the hood normally found in more expensive luxury cars…This car is sophisticated, fun to drive and practical.”

Engine and Transmission
The North American version of the all-new 2011 Jetta features the powerful and efficient German engineering that drivers have come to expect from Volkswagen. Four engines will be available in the U.S. and Canada, including a 2.0-liter TDI® Clean Diesel featuring common rail injection with 236 lbs./ft. of torque (320 Newton-meters). The engine runs as quietly as a gasoline engine, but yields the power of a sports car, achieving 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds. All Jetta engines will be offered with a manual transmission as standard equipment. An automatic transmission will also be available with each engine version as an option. On the new 2.0-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TSI®, Volkswagen will offer the six-speed DSG® – one of the most advanced and efficient automatic transmission systems in the world. In the U.S., S, SE, SEL and TDI versions of the Jetta will be available, as will a 2.0-liter GLI.

Exterior
The all-new 2011 Jetta has been completely overhauled, inside and out. Its new wheelbase and exterior length are significantly bigger than its predecessor – resulting in superior performance, more space and greater comfort. At 182.7-inches long, 57.1 inches tall and 70.1 inches wide, it is more than 3.5 inches longer than its predecessors. The interplay of exterior dimensions leads to a powerful balance of proportions. In parallel, the new Volkswagen “design DNA” sharpens the car’s styling. This has resulted in clear, precise lines and athletically muscular surfaces, which lend a timeless elegance and dynamic styling to the sedan.

On the front end of the car, the prominence of horizontal lines defines the design. The high–gloss black radiator grille combines with the car’s trapezoidal headlights to form a styling unit. Under this is the fully painted bumper, which is designed as cleanly as a sculpted surface. Below that, another cooling air intake and the tray-shaped front spoiler gives the car a sporty finish. The upper front end section shows a powerful transition from the v-shaped engine hood to the fenders on the sides; the shoulder section realized here is derived from the NCC concept car, and provides dynamic and muscular styling.

The styling characteristics in the side profile of the Jetta meld into yet another interpretation of the “design DNA” conceptualized by Walter de Silva, the Italian Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group, and the German Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, Klaus Bischoff. A great example of the unique styling characteristics is found in the shoulder or “tornado” line and the powerfully emphasized arches of the wheel wells.

With integrated turn signal indicators, the styling of the outside mirrors emulates the larger CC. Compared with the previous model, the all-new Jetta has grown in clarity and pre-eminence in its side profile. Harmonized surfaces and sporty shoulders dominate the rear section. Powerful in illumination and visually distinctive, the taillights are split into two sections, extending on either side from the fender into the tailgate.

Interior
A key benefit of the extended wheelbase is that it resulted in a more comfortable layout of the five-seat seating area. Legroom is now a long 38.1 inches, a 2.6-inch gain from the previous model. Customers looking for a more personalized touch can, for the first time, have interior accents changed out at a Volkswagen dealer.

Engineers went to work on the interior down to the finest details, providing a level of quality and perfection far beyond other vehicles in its class. A common conceptual thread throughout the car is the intuitive controls and well-arranged instruments. The new steering wheel designs impress visually and to the touch. The right hand rests ergonomically on the gear shift grip. Further up on the center console are the newly designed and intuitive controls for climate, radio and navigation systems. This console section is slightly inclined toward the driver for ideal alignment of the cockpit. Also in optimal view are the round instruments. The multifunction display (trip computer) is located between them.

The rear bench seatback is split 60/40 and folds, increasing the car’s versatility. The tailgate can also be opened from inside the car by a remote unlock switch. Up to six airbags (two front, two side, two window) are also part of the equipment package.
