2011 Hyundai RB Official Detail and Image
Posted by: | CommentsHyundai Motor Company introduced a new sub-compact family sedan concept RB at the 2010 Moscow International Motor Show (MIMS). The RB projects a coupe-like dynamic styling that is sculpted, stately and performance-oriented.
With elegant lines that resemble a calligrapher’s “orchid strokes,” the concept RB continues Hyundai Motor’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design philosophy that injects sophistication and dynamic angles into the shape of a vehicle. Like any timeless work of art, the fluidic essence that characterizes molding design of Hyundai’s latest models is inspired by nature, realizing the harmonic coexistence of all things created.
The strong design hints of the production version are highlighted in concept RB’s large hexagonal front grill, headlamps and “L”-shaped fog lamps that give luxurious and exquisite looks.
When the production sub-compact sedan arrives in Russia, it will be powered by the modern Gamma engine, 1.6L or 1.4L DOHC in-line four cylinder gasoline engine that features multiport fuel injection with CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing). By replacing the old Alpha engine with Gamma, the sedan promises more power and torque, as well as best-in-class fuel economy, in keeping with Hyundais pledge to be the industrys eco-leader. The estimated power and torque of 1.6 Gamma are respectively 124ps and 156 N.m while those of 1.4 Gamma are 107ps and 135 N.m. The powerful and fuel-efficient Gamma engine will be mated to a four-speed automatic transmission or a standard five-speed manual transaxle.
Production version of this concept car is scheduled to begin at Hyundai’s first full-cycle plant in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Russia(HMMR) in January 2011, and will join the Hyundai lineup in the spring of 2011.

2012 Mercedes CLS-Class Official Revealed [Video]
Posted by: | CommentsA generation ahead: The CLS-Class created a new vehicle category in 2003 by combining the elegance and expressiveness of a coupé with the comfort and functionality of a sedan. The CLS delighted the public, astounded the competition and created a new style icon: for years the CLS has endured as the only four-door coupé in its class, and since October 2004 it has been the car of choice for around 170,000 buyers worldwide. “Customers all over the world benefited from our bold move to launch a completely new vehicle concept onto the market”, explains a delighted Dr. Joachim Schmidt, member of the board of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales & Marketing. “And with its exciting design, the new edition of the CLS also benefits from the fact that we are a whole generation ahead of the competition with our four-door Coupé.”
Celebrating its world premiere at the Paris motor show (October 2 – 17, 2010), the 2012 CLS-Class builds on the pioneering role of its predecessor with a fresh new interpretation. “The new CLS points the way forward for the future perceptible design idiom of Mercedes-Benz”, explains Professor Gorden Wagener, head of design at Mercedes-Benz. “At the same time it takes its inspiration from the great tradition of stylish, refined sportiness which has always been a feature of Mercedes coupés.”
Exterior: classic Coupé styling with distinctive front
The proportions remain as spectacular as ever: long hood, tightly-styled frameless side windows and a dynamic roof sweeping back at an angle towards the rear. The four-door Coupé from Mercedes-Benz immediately made its mark in 2003 as a new style icon. Though the proportions are the same, the second generation of this design trendsetter has a completely new look.
What immediately strikes the eye is the innovative front design, which is reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Visually, the radiator grille is not integrated into the hood but formed separately. This further highlights the long, sporty hood. The grille is dominated by the large central star, which unites the car with other Mercedes-Benz coupés and also enhances brand identity. The large, elongated dark air inlets with black grilles also add to the vehicle’s athletic appearance.
Design brings high-tech features to life
Another distinguishing feature comes in the form of the full LED headlamps, which are the world’s first to offer all of the dynamic light functions using LED technology. This innovation boasts an impressive design – inside they are divided into three arrow-shaped layers from top to bottom: the upper layer contains an LED indicator, beneath which is a striking LED side light offers LED low beam functions. The side light can also be seen when the high beam is activated, thereby creating a unique night-time design. The lowest level of the headlamp houses the main beam and nightview functions. A total of 71 LED’s provide an unmistakable appearance as well as a significantly enhanced view of the road compared with previous systems.
The typical CLS outline, with its elegantly long proportions, is the dominating attribute of the new model. The effect of the dynamic, athletic form has been enhanced with a new interplay of lines and surfaces. A unique “dropping line”, which begins above the front wheel-wells and slopes downward towards the rear, represents a new interpretation of a renowned design hallmark of historic Mercedes sports cars.
A distinctive and muscular sports car-like shoulder line above the rear axle highlights the athletic character of the 2012 CLS. The flared wheel arches resemble the powerful thighs of a feline predator waiting to pounce.
The side profile is rounded off with wide wrap-around tail lights featuring LED technology — a linking element to the rear of the vehicle. The shape is emphasized by the broad shoulder line, which is clearly visible from behind and supports the flat roof. A wide metal insert adds a further visual highlight at the rear.
The interior: design brings quality to life
The interior of the 2012 CLS-Class is also distinguished by a timeless design which combines discreet elegance with innovative details and handcrafted perfection. The eye-catching cockpit features a wrap-around dashboard sweeping from the driver’s door over the instrument panel support and across to the front passenger door. The central display has also been integrated seamlessly into the upper part of the instrument panel.
The CLS also lives up to its role as a design icon thanks to the innovative nature of the materials used, including a mixture of satin and high-gloss finishes used on the metal surfaces. Highlights also include matte galvanized air vents which ideally compliment a high-gloss-trimmed analogue clock.
Handcrafted perfection is reflected in details such as the stitched seat covers and dashboard. The individual parts of the leather dashboard are sewn together by hand in a process which takes several hours, after which they are fitted and upholstered with high-quality padding. Prior to this process, the leather is also heated to preshrink it, so that it will retain its shape even after extreme exposure to direct sunlight.
Around four animal skins are processed for each CLS. The particularly exclusive 1.6-millimetre thick semi-aniline premium leather meets the highest standards of both look and feel. The natural pore structure remains intact thanks to a light pigmentation, and the leather has an especially warm and soft feel to it. Premium leather requires a very precise manual selection process and therefore a high amount of raw leather.
The refined interior of the CLS is further reflected in the generous use of high-quality trim elements, located on the instrument panels, center console and door linings. Customers can choose between high-gloss brown burl walnut or high-gloss black ash. The wood has been perfectly fitted around difficult contours for a masterful handcrafted finish, and the wood trim has been matched according to grain as part of an sophisticated selection process to create a consistent overall impression.
For an even more progressive look, black piano lacquer or carbon fiber trim elements are also available. Handcrafted as well, up to seven layers are applied and polished for the piano lacquer trim until the high-gloss finish is achieved.
2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca Track Version Unveiled [Video]
Posted by: | CommentsHow do you amp up a performance car package as complete as the new 2012 Mustang Boss 302 – already a street-legal race car in its own right? Pull out everything that doesn’t make it go faster and add in more of what does. The result is the limited-production Laguna Seca package – the ultimate 2012 Boss, named to commemorate the first-place Boss 302 finish at the 1970 Trans-Am series opener.
-Laguna Seca package pares the race-inspired 2012 Mustang Boss 302 down to its essential elements, with aggressive suspension, chassis and aerodynamic tuning creating a ready-for-racing Boss
-Ford Mustang team members developed the package to provide weekend racers with a factory track car that could be driven to the course, take the win, then driven back home again
-R-compound tires, rear seat-delete, aggressive front splitter for track use, and rear spoiler and rear cross-car bracing shave seconds off track times and boost lateral acceleration to 1.03 g
“The Laguna Seca package puts a race-ready version of the new Mustang Boss 302 directly into enthusiasts’ hands,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. “Laguna Seca isn’t intended for Boss buyers who simply want an exhilarating daily driver. Think of it like a factory-built race car, which we hope avid racers and track-day fans are going to love.”
Boss Laguna Seca builds on the bumper-to-bumper improvements found on the standard Boss while further stiffening the chassis and installing an aerodynamics package carried over almost in its entirety from the Ford Racing Boss 302R.
“Drivers who know how to get the most from a tuned race car on a closed course are going to be amazed by what the Laguna Seca is capable of,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “The balance, agility and tuning of each vehicle system places the driver at the center of the machine, completely connected to everything the car is doing.”
Chassis enhancements
Laguna Seca cars are powered by the same smooth, high-winding 440-hp 5.0-liter V8 as the standard Boss, since the engine was already tuned specifically for road racing. Instead, engineers turned their attention toward delivering power to the ground most efficiently, and getting the car around a track in the quickest possible time.
“When we built the Boss, we had to step back and ask ourselves ‘How do we improve on this?’” said David Pericak, Ford Mustang chief engineer. “That car is so strong we realized the Laguna Seca package was going to have to be just a fraction of a step back from the Ford Racing 302R to top it. So we went back and threw daily-driver practicality out the window, cut some things we couldn’t cut on the volume model, like the back seat, and built it the way we would set up a production Boss for pure competition.”
Laguna Seca cars eliminate the rear seats, instead adding a cross-car X-brace that couples the structure between the rear wheels. The brace offers chassis stiffness improvements of as much as 10 percent and allows the suspension tuning – precisely calibrated by Mustang team members – to better do its job.
Standard Recaro front seats were designed by Ford SVT in cooperation with Recaro for high performance Mustang models, and are shared between the Boss and GT500. An Alcantara-covered race steering wheel provides a solid grip for hard cornering.
Engine power routes through a six-speed close-ratio manual gearbox to a standard 3.73-ratio Torsen limited-slip differential, helping the revised rear suspension deliver maximum torque and traction under the punishing conditions encountered on the track.
Higher spring rates and a larger rear stabilizer bar – all upgraded over Boss specifications – help generate unrelenting grip. And drivers can dial in exactly the level of shock stiffness a particular track requires using the four standard, independently adjustable dampers with Laguna Seca-specific valving.
The final touch for a proper race car was to add the proper wheels and tires: Laguna Seca models use lightweight 19-inch alloy racing wheels in staggered widths: 9 inches in front, 10 inches in the rear. R-compound ultra-high-performance tires, 255/40ZR-19 in the front, 285/35ZR-19 in the rear, maintain contact with the pavement – a job that ended up being trickier than expected.
“The R-compound tires on the Laguna Seca are so sticky we had to really work on the rear suspension tuning to make sure drivers can get the most out of them,” explains Pericak. “The rear stabilizer bar is the largest we’ve ever installed on a production Mustang – including any SVT product. The rear spring rate was also maximized to work with the massive rear tires and balance the car for minimal lap times.”
While standard Boss 302 cars get vented brake dust shields to help cool the rotors, Laguna Seca models receive Ford Racing front brake ducts that force outside air directly onto the 14-inch vented front rotors, helping to eliminate brake fade and ensure hard, repeatable late braking on the track. Combined, the braking changes help refine the sense for drivers of being directly connected to the pads – an essential edge during car-to-car combat on a road course.
Added up, the further improvements to Boss Laguna Seca result in the best-handling Mustang ever, with more than 1.03 g of lateral acceleration, stopping distances shortened by three feet from 60 mph over Boss, 0-60 acceleration improvements of one tenth of a second, and an overall expected lap time improvement of one to two seconds over the standard Boss on a typical road course.
Styling evokes racing, improves aerodynamics
As a race car should, Boss 302 models with the Laguna Seca package look like nothing else on the road. A bright red C-stripe offsets either Black or Ingot Silver paint, and is complemented by a red roof panel. Red also sets off the front grille, mirror caps and rear pedestal spoiler, while Laguna Seca rear badging and unique two-tone red and silver wheels complete the transformation.
Adding both to appearance and aerodynamics, an aggressive front splitter for track use adds downforce at the front of the car, while helping channel air under and around the car. At the same time, air impacting the front end is funneled into the radiator and brake ducts, supporting cooling even under grueling race conditions.
“The Laguna Seca front splitter is really a Ford Racing piece we’ve lightly adapted for our purposes,” explains Pericak. “It’s been tested and refined for the last six months on the Boss 302R to perform exactly as required on the track; we just made a few changes so it could be adapted to the production Boss – though owners will still want to avoid speed bumps and parking blocks.”
At the back, a large rear spoiler is sized to exactly complement the effect provided by the front splitter and underbody aero treatments, with the combination adding as much as 90 pounds of downforce at 140 mph.
“Balance is the key on Boss, and even more so on Laguna Seca,” said Pericak. “A winning race car has to do everything well, and we’ve had the ability to test all the engineering that went into Boss Laguna Seca on the Ford Racing 302R. It’s not for everyone: It’s stiffer, there’s no back seat, and the aero package is designed for downforce, not speed bumps in the mall parking lot. But for hard-core Mustang racers who want something they can occasionally drive on the street, to shows or whatever, Laguna Seca is the car they’ve been waiting for, and they’re not going to be disappointed.”

2010 Seat Ibiza ST Pricing Announced
Posted by: | CommentsCoinciding with its showroom debut in the UK this month SEAT is today revealing full price and specification details of its new Ibiza ST.
The exciting third ‘silhouette’ in the SEAT line-up joins the sporty Ibiza SC and practical Ibiza 5dr to make today’s Ibiza range the most extensive in the Spanish supermini’s 25-year history.
Another sleek product of the pen of SEAT’s chief designer, Luc Donckerwolke, the estate version of SEAT’s biggest seller is, clearly, created to offer more carrying capacity without compromising on the sporty style that makes the Ibiza one of the most dynamic and eye-catching superminis on the road.
Boot space is up 138 litres over the 5dr taking the car’s carrying capacity to a sizable 430 litres (seats up) meaning, among other things, that the ST offers a great value alternative to many apparently larger family hatchbacks from the class above.
Offered from launch with a broad variety of engines, including sporty turbocharged petrols and frugal latest generation turbodiesels, and with the option of a familiar five-speed manual or hi-tech seven-speed DSG gearbox, the new SEAT is even available to order in super-frugal Ecomotive form, with CO2 emissions confirmed at a road tax-busting 92 g/km and an exceptional combined fuel economy figure of 80.7 mpg.
The extensive array of modern engines includes a newly EUV-compliant 1.4 and rises to a turbocharged 1.2-litre TSI that’s available with manual or ‘self-shifter’ DSG ‘box. Diesel Ibiza ST buyers are offered the choice of a refined 75 PS 1.2-litre TDI CR – also available in the Ecomotive version – or a potent 1.6-litre TDI CR that’s good for 105 PS at 4,400 rpm.
Performance is fully in keeping with the Spanish brand’s sporty ethos and the most dynamic version at launch, the 1.2 TSI with DSG-auto, covers the 0-62 mph dash in a spirited 10.1 seconds before charging on, where legal, to a top speed of 118 mph.
Clearly, Ibiza ST buyers will be looking for practicality as well as sporty style, though, and to that end the new car includes a selection of common sense features that make it as ‘sensible’ as it is ‘chic’.
Split folding rear sears with a 60/40 bias, sleek roof rails in either black or chrome finish, a carefully designed low load height and wide rear hatch, a flat boot floor and innovative storage options throughout the ST’s smart interior enable it to work with effortless efficiency.
Available to order now in SEAT’s familiar and clear model line-up of S A/C, SE and Sport, the new Ibiza ST costs from just £12,070 RRP for the entry-level 1.4-litre 16V S A/C. Prices rise through engine and equipment levels to a current ceiling of £14,910 for the Ibiza ST 1.2 TDI CR Ecomotive in luxurious SE spec.
No matter what their budget, though, all Ibiza ST buyers can look forward to a generous complement of standard-fit kit including, among much else: air conditioning; four-speaker stereo radio with MP3-compatible CD and AUX-in; steering column-mounted audio controls; electric front windows; roof rails; speed sensitive electro-hydraulic power steering; volumetric alarm and remote central locking with deadlocks.
Like its Barcelona-built cousins the Ibiza SC and Ibiza 5dr, the new Ibiza ST boasts a liberal list of safety features as standard. All versions feature head and chest airbags for both driver and front seat passenger, head-thorax front side airbags, front passenger airbag disconnection, ABS and three three-point rear seatbelts.
Optionally available, depending on engine and spec choices, are other features such as SEAT’s clever electronic XDS system – which mimics the function of a conventional limited slip differential – and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP).
On the subject of options, Ibiza ST buyers are able to specify an extensive array of extras to make their new car even more luxurious. Among the items available are: climate control (including a refrigerated glove compartment); Bi-xenon headlights with AFS, headlight washers and daytime running lights; a panoramic glass sunroof (in lieu of roof rails) and a variety of alloy wheels that, depending on spec, can measure up to 17 inches.
Welcoming the latest addition to the stylish Ibiza ‘family’ SEAT UK Product Manager Andy McGregor said: ‘Our new ST shows that small cars really can be both roomy and stylish.
‘The car’s arrival in SEAT showrooms makes the Ibiza line-up not only the most extensive in our history but, also, the most practical and attractive. I’m sure we’ll see the new Ibiza ST carve out a very successful niche for itself as buyers latch onto its great looks, flexibility and convenience.’
2011 Audi A7 Sportback Price from €51,650
Posted by: | CommentsAudi is targeting a new vehicle class with the A7 Sportback. The large, elegant five-door model combines the emotional character of a grand coupe, the comfort and prestige of a sedan and the active practicality of a station wagon. With its lightweight body, the powerful and efficient V6 engines, the sporty chassis and the advanced assistance and multimedia systems, it sets standards in many fields of technology. The Audi A7 Sportback will roll into dealerships in the fall, with prices starting at €51,650.
Aesthetic and athletic – the Audi A7 Sportback
Emotion-packed design, sporty character and innovative technology: Audi is targeting a new market segment with the A7 Sportback. The large five-door model with the dynamically accentuated rear end brings together the best of three worlds: the sporty elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon.
The A7 Sportback is pure high-tech. Its body is very lightweight thanks to numerous aluminum components. The elegant interior shows a craftsman’s level of workmanship. The four V6 engines combine refined power with groundbreaking efficiency. The 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) and multitronic has CO2 emissions of just 139 grams per kilometer (223.70 g/mile). The sporty chassis comes with new solutions, such as electromechanical power steering. When it comes to assistance and infotainment systems, the luxury-class coupe exhibits all of the innovative power expected of Audi.
The five-door coupe from Audi combines supreme, long-distance comfort with a sporty character. The interior noise level is very low even at fast highway speeds, with the V6 engines providing refined acoustic feedback as their power unfolds.
The excellent vibrational comfort likewise contributes to the atmosphere of cultured tranquility on board. This is the result of painstakingly tuning all components, systematic hydraulic damping in the axle and drivetrain bearings and the extremely stiff body. The body is comprised primarily of aluminum and high-tech steels, making it extremely lightweight and safe. The large rear hatch opens wide to reveal a large, extremely usable luggage compartment that is very easy to load. Its 535-liter (18.89 cu ft) capacity swells to a volume of 1,390 liters (49.09 cu ft) with the rear seat backrests folded down.
With the A7 Sportback, which will be rolling into dealerships in the fall at a base price of €51,600, Audi is taking up a new design line representing elegance on a grand scale. The five-door coupe is 4.97 meters (16.31 ft) long and 1.91 meters (6.27 ft) wide, but only 1.42 meters (4.66 ft) high. Its long hood, the short front overhang, the long wheelbase, the sportily flowing C-pillars and the sharply dropping rear create a dynamic overall impression. The five-door coupe is an aesthetic athlete with a wide, powerful road stance.
Optional LED headlights reinforce the unmistakable expression of the A7 Sportback and provide all light functions with light-emitting diodes while minimizing energy consumption. Bi-xenon headlights and LED tail lights come standard. The innovative all-weather light function has also been integrated into the headlights, replacing the classic fog lights.
The sinewy sportiness of the exterior carries over into the interior of the A7 Sportback, where Audi again demonstrates its leading role in automotive design. The salient element is the “wrap-around,” a horizontal line that encircles the driver and front-seat passenger in the interior to provide a feeling of safety and security. The wave-shaped application strip with its integrative dynamics is the salient element of the dashboard.
The utmost care has been devoted to every last detail in the interior. Workmanship is at a craftsman’s level. Optional climate-control and massage functions are available for the front seats covered in high-grade Audi leathers. The optional ambient lighting fills the entire interior with atmosphere.
Like Audi’s A8 flagship, the A7 Sportback also combines a new level of technical intelligence with logical, intuitive ergonomics and self-explanatory operation. The advanced MMI operating system with central menu button and reduced number of buttons comes standard, while one of the options is a new head-up display that projects the most important information on the windshield. The MMI touch system combines a hard drive navigation system with the convenience of touchpad input.
The driver can use the touchpad to perform numerous functions, such as using his or her finger to write the letters of the destination or the digits of the telephone number.
The online services work together with Google to connect the five-door Audi coupe to the Internet via the Bluetooth car phone. A UMTS module delivers images and information from Google Earth to the monitor and combines them with the navigation route. A WLAN hotspot is used to connect mobile devices. Further to the Bose sound system, the top-of-the-line option is the Advanced Sound System from Bang & Olufsen featuring 1,300 watts of power and 15 speakers.
The top navigation system works closely together with the many optional driver assistance and safety systems in the A7 Sportback. It forwards the route data to the control units for the headlights, the automatic transmission and the adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, enabling these systems to recognize complex scenarios. In many cases, the Audi pre sense safety system can reduce the severity of accidents and their consequences. The new Audi active lane assist helps the driver to keep the A7 Sportback firmly on course, and the new park assist system relieves the driver of the chore of steering when parallel parking.
Audi will initially offer the A7 Sportback with a choice of four powerful and cultivated V6 engines: two gasoline and two TDI units. Their power output ranges from 150 kW (204 hp) to 220 kW (300 hp), and their efficiency sets impressive new standards in the vehicle class. The new 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) and multitronic consumes on average just 5.3 liters of fuel per 100 km (44.38 US mpg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of just 139 g per km (223.70 g/mile). All engines use Audi’s innovative thermal management system, a recuperation system and a start-stop system.
The standard automatic transmissions also play a role in the high efficiency of the Audi A7 Sportback. Audi offers two different transmissions depending on the engines: The continuous multitronic sends the power to the front wheels, while the sporty seven-speed S tronic works together with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The latest evolutionary stage of quattro features a crown-gear center differential and torque vectoring.
The drive system is particularly flexible and dynamic. The optional sport differential actively distributes the power between the rear wheels.
The chassis also combines sporty precision with luxurious comfort. The Audi A7 Sportback rolls on large wheels measuring from 18 to 20 inches in diameter. The chassis features aluminum control arms and a newly developed power steering system with an electromechanical drive for high efficiency. The Audi drive select dynamics system is standard and can be supplemented by the optional adaptive air suspension with controlled damping.

The design: Urban elegance, dynamically flowing lines and the characteristic features of a BMW X model.
The body design of the new BMW X3 conveys urban elegance, durability and agility. The combination of a flat front end and a high rear end produces, when viewed from the side, a dynamically formed wedge shape, indicating the vehicle’s sporting characteristics.
Convex and concave surfaces are accentuated with distinctively structured lines, giving the car body the appearance of a meticulously modelled sculpture. The BMW X-specific black bordering on the lower edge of the car body of the new BMW X3 has an exceptionally discreet design.
At the front end of the new BMW X3, the forward-slanting BMW kidney grille, a large headlight assembly, a powerful-looking front apron and the bonnet boasting six contour lines sweeping down to meet at the kidney grill, signalise breathtaking presence. Together with the round headlights, the fog lamps, which are positioned far towards the outside, form the triangular light source arrangement that is characteristic of BMW X models. The upper edge of the headlight assembly sports an accentuating chrome trim, creating the focussed look so typical of BMW vehicles. In conjunction with the optional Xenon headlights, the vehicle features daytime running lights that function by means of bright white LED light rings.
The side view of the new BMW X3 is also characterised by a unique interpretation of typical BMW X design features. Powerfully flared wheel arches and the short distance between the front axle and the instrument panel are an indication of four-wheel drive technology and emphasise the robust character of the Sports Activity Vehicle. The dynamic appearance of the silhouette is additionally accentuated by three characteristic lines. The new BMW X3′s brand-typical contour line at door handle level rises steeply at first within the front wheel arch area, then to flow gently to the rear end. Two less pronounced lines follow the course of the line above the wheel arches.
The rear end is characterised by horizontal lines, underlining the new BMW X3′s robust character. Accurately applied lines and expressively modelled surfaces create attractive light and shadow effects. The taillights, which are located far to the outside, have a distinctive T shape that is characteristic of the BMW X3. Engine range: Four-cylinder diesel and straight six-cylinder petrol engine of the latest generation.
The new BMW X3 xDrive20d now offers better performance and higher efficiency than any of its comparable rivals. It is powered by a 2-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine with aluminium crankcase and Common Rail direct injection, delivering a maximum power output of 135 kW/184 at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 380 Nm between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. The engine develops sufficient power to allow the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds, reaching top speed at 210 km/h. With an average fuel consumption of 5.6 litres/100 km and a CO2 emission level of 149 grams per kilometre, the BMW X3 xDrive20d establishes a new benchmark for efficiency in this vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 xDrive20d with automatic transmission achieves identical acceleration, top speed and fuel consumption, with a CO2 emission level of 147 grams per kilometre.
Spontaneous response, high-revving characteristics, excellent running smoothness and efficient fuel economy characterise the power unit featured in the BMW X3 xDrive35i. Consequently, it possesses the qualities typical of a straight six-cylinder BMW engine, combing them, thanks to an innovative technological concept, at an exceptionally high level. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, High Precision Injection and variable valve control VALVETRONIC have been combined with each other for the first time. As a result, the 3-litre power unit delivers a peak output of 225 kW/306 bhp at 5,800 rpm, with maximum torque of 400 Nm being available at 1,300 rpm. This engine enables the X3 xDrive35i to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. Top speed is 245 km/h. The BMW X3 xDrive35i offers not only the most dynamic driving characteristics, but also by far the most favourable fuel consumption and emission levels within the competitive environment of its engine class. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 8.8 litres/100 km and the CO2 emission level is 204 grams per kilometre.
BMW EfficientDynamics in the new BMW X3: Premiere for Auto Start Stop function in conjunction with automatic transmission.
The new BMW X3 xDrive35i is equipped as standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This option, also unique within the competitive environment, is available for the BMW X3 xDrive20d as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual gearbox.
The automatic transmission is combined for the first time with an Auto Start Stop function. When stopping at road junctions or in a traffic jam, the engine is automatically switched off. As soon as the driver takes his or her foot off the brake pedal, the engine restarts. If the Auto Hold function is activated, brief pressure on the accelerator pedal is sufficient.
The Auto Start Stop function is also a standard feature in the X3 xDrive20d with manual gearbox. The car is additionally equipped with a gear shift indicator. Furthermore, the equipment featured in all model variants, which include brake energy regeneration, EPS Electric Power Steering, demand-controlled ancillary components, intelligent lightweight construction and tyres with reduced rolling resistance contribute towards lowering fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels.
Newly developed suspension, optimised xDrive and unique options for made-to-measure dynamics and comfort
The new BMW X3 comes with permanent four-wheel drive technology BMW xDrive as standard. This electronically controlled system ensures variable distribution of drive torque to the front and rear axles. The control unit, which is interlinked with the DSC Dynamic Stability Control, counteracts at an early stage any tendency to oversteer or understeer through fast and precise response. By means of innovative tuning designed to enhance driving dynamics, the intelligent four-wheel drive technology optimises not only traction, but, above all, handling in bends. Even during steady cornering, a higher proportion percentage of drive torque is transferred to the rear wheels. Optional Performance Control enhances the BMW X3′s agile handling even further. Targeted braking of the rear wheel nearest the inside of the bend together with a simultaneous increase in drive power ensure the vehicle’s exceptionally agile steering behaviour. This results in enhanced dynamics in bends and best possible traction.
The new BMW X3 also features completely redeveloped suspension technology. The combination of a double-joint spring-strut axle at the front and a multi-link rear axle offers the ideal prerequisites for optimising agility and driving comfort to an equal degree. EPS Electric Power Steering including the Servotronic function for speed-dependent power steering is incorporated in a BMW X3 model for the first time and contributes significantly to precise handling. The newly conceived variable sports steering available as an option reduces the degree of steering movement necessary to turn the front wheels. As a result, less steering effort is required for parking, cornering and swerving manoeuvres.
Dynamic Damper Control is optionally available for the new BMW X3. The electronically controlled dampers adapt to road surface conditions and the driver’s style of driving. The driver is able to influence the characteristic map of the damper control by means of the Dynamic Control system. This function, which is available for a BMW X model for the first time, enables the driver to choose between the “NORMAL”, “SPORT” and “SPORT+” modes using a button on the centre console. Therefore, in addition to damping behaviour, accelerator progression, engine response, the characteristic curve of the power steering, DSC response thresholds and – depending on desired options – the shifting dynamics of the automatic transmission are influenced. All factors are combined into a well-balanced overall set-up.
Like all BMW X models, the new BMW X3 is also provided with an extremely torsion-resistant body, precisely defined support structures and large deformation zones. The safety equipment package comprises front and pelvic thorax airbags, side curtain head airbags, three-point automatic seatbelts on all seats, belt force limiters, belt latch tensioners and crash-active front headrests as well as ISOFIX child seat mounts in the rear compartment.
Innovative options and an extensive range of BMW ConnectedDrive functions.
The choice of optional features ranges from automatic climate control with 2-zone control, a panorama sunroof, high-end audio equipment and the navigation system Professional with hard-disk storage, to automatic rear lid operation and a tow coupling with electronically pivoting ball head. The choice of driver assistance systems offered by BMW ConnectedDrive is unique in the segment. The new BMW X3 can be equipped, inter alia, with the systems Head-up Display, Adaptive Cornering Headlights, High-beam Assistant, Cruise Control with braking function (standard on the BMW X3 xDrive35i) and reversing camera including Top View.
Production at the BMW Spartanburg plant.
Agility and comfort, sportiness and efficiency, durability and elegance, variability and a premium ambience – the new BMW X3 fulfils in an exceptionally convincing way the varying demands made on a modern Sports Activity Vehicle. With its multifaceted qualities it sets new standards in the segment established by its predecessor.
The new BMW X3 is produced at the BMW Spartanburg plant in accordance with stringent BMW Group quality standards. With the production of theBMW X5 and BMW X6 models, the location, which is based in SouthCarolina, USA, has become the competence centre for BMW X models within the BMW Group’s worldwide production network. Thanks to comprehensive extension measures, the preconditions for integrating the new BMW X3 into the production process have also been established.
2011 Volkswagen Jetta Official Revealed
Posted by: | CommentsVolkswagen is presenting – at Times Square in New York – an entirely new Jetta design. The model series has a global presence with 9.6 million units sold, and it has been a bestseller especially in the USA. The follow-up model to the most successful German brand sedan in America takes a gigantic leap forward – conceptually and especially in its styling. The design projects a more dynamic image than ever before. Offering a preview of the new Jetta’s styling was the NCC coupe concept car shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Designers of the new Jetta sedan drew their inspiration from the coupe, and this bodes well for the potential sports appeal of the new Jetta. This also means that the new Jetta will no longer be sharing any body components with the Golf, rather it will be a vehicle type that is just as independent as a CC or a Tiguan.
The new car’s dimensions were re-proportioned compared with those of the concept car and the previous Jetta model: Wheelbase (+ 2.76 inches / + 7 cm) and exterior length (+ 3.54 inches / + 9 cm) grew significantly. The perceptible results: superior performance, more space, greater comfort.
Designers and engineers also re-designed the interior down to the finest details; the quality and detailed perfection inside the five-seater now truly exceed traditional class boundaries. For the first time, if the customer is looking for a more customized ambiance it is also easy to have interior accents changed out at a Volkswagen dealer.
German Engineering is the key word that captures the attention of many customers in the USA. And that is not the only place where German engineering stands for the highest quality and efficient technology. The new Jetta is a prime example, and a look at its powertrain technologies illustrates this clearly. As a turbodiesel with highly advanced common rail direct injection, the Jetta sets the benchmark. The US version, equipped with a 103 kW / 140 PS TDI Clean Diesel (conforming to the BIN 5 emissions standard) attains a top value for Highway fuel economy with 42 mpg* (combined fuel economy: 34 mpg*) – making the Jetta one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market. In Europe, Volkswagen will be introducing its smallest TDI – a 77 kW / 105 PS engine – in early 2011. In the BlueMotion Technology version, this Jetta’s fuel consumption is a sensational 4.1 l/100 km* – a top value for a sedan in the 4.6-meter class.
In addition, Volkswagen has tailored US equipment versions (S, SE, SEL and TDI) to consistently fulfill the wishes of American car drivers, and it has developed a sedan that is one of the best in its class in terms of quality and fuel economy. The already well-equipped base version will launch at prices starting at 15,995 US dollars (European prices for the Jetta Trendline, Comfortline and Highline to be announced for specific countries as pre-ordering begins). In parallel, Volkswagen has developed a second version of the safety chassis designed especially for America.
Volkswagen of America – 800,000 cars per year by 2018
By 2018, Volkswagen of America wants to triple its annual sales volume to about 800,000 vehicles from the East Coast to the West. The new Jetta plays a key role here. Today, the Jetta sells at a rate of 110,000 units per year in the USA. We want to increase this figure. One of our recipes for success: a clear focus on customers and not just on the competition. Since the days of the Beetle built by Ferdinand Porsche, this has made Volkswagen unique among high-volume car makers. The Jetta is guiding this philosophy into the future – with its low fuel consumption, excellent vehicle dynamics and a comprehensive safety concept. ESP and tire pressure monitoring are standard systems aboard; based on results of independent crash testing by the US organization IIHS, the previous model was already named “Top Safety Pick”. The car’s top crash safety has now been further enhanced by further perfected pedestrian protection. The quality of workmanship is pioneering. With a decidedly comfortable interior and a design that is as stylish as it is powerful, the new Jetta is taking on the automotive challenges of our times better than the vast majority of its competitors.
Exterior styling and dimensions
Never before has a Jetta been so large. The new model is 182.7 inches (4.64 meters) long, 57.1 inches (1.45 meters) tall and 70.1 inches (1.78 meters) wide. As noted, this makes the Volkswagen now being presented in New York 3.54 inches (9 cm) longer than the previous model. The interplay of exterior dimensions leads to a powerful balance of proportions. In parallel, the new Volkswagen ‘design DNA’ sharpens the car’s styling. This has resulted in clear, precise lines and athletically muscular surfaces, which lend a timeless elegance and dynamic styling to the sedan.
Front end: Here, the prominence of horizontal lines defines the design. The high-gloss black radiator grille combines with the car’s trapezoidal headlights to form a styling unit. Under the unit formed by the grille and headlights there is the fully painted bumper, which is designed as a cleanly sculpted surface. One section lower, another cooling air intake and the tray-shaped front spoiler (in the style of ‘splitters’ used in car racing) gives the car a sporty finish. The upper front end section shows a powerful transition from the v-shaped engine hood to the fenders on the sides; the shoulder section realized here was derived 1:1 from the NCC concept car, and it produces dynamic and muscular styling.
Side profile: In the side profile of this sedan, styling characteristics that mark all new Volkswagens launched during the past year meld into yet another interpretation of the ‘design DNA’ conceptualized by the Italian Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group (Walter de Silva) and the German Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand (Klaus Bischoff). The best example of this: the characteristic shoulder or ‘tornado’ line and the powerfully emphasized arches of the wheel wells. Formally, they intersect the main volumes of the large homogeneous surfaces, conveying a strong dynamic image. Thanks to wide track dimensions, the wheel arches also form a precise transition – as though cut with a knife – to accommodate up to an 18 inch wheel. Meanwhile, the styling of the outside mirrors with their integrated turn signal indicators emulate the larger CC. Compared to the previous model, the new Jetta has also grown in clarity and pre-eminence in its side profile.
Rear section: Harmonized surfaces and sporty shoulders also dominate the look in back of the new Volkswagen Jetta. Powerful in illumination and visually distinctive: the taillights. They are split into two sections, and on each side they extend from the fender into the tailgate.
Interior and dimensions
The interior with its high-end image definitely pushes the boundaries of the vehicle class above. The Jetta is significantly increasing its lead over the competition here. One key benefit of the car’s extended wheelbase is that it enabled a layout of the rear seating area of the five-seat Jetta that is substantially more comfortable. Compared to the previous model, legroom is now a long 38.1 inches (96.7 cm) – a gain of 2.6 inches (6.7 cm).
Inside, the new Jetta also offers unparalleled perfection in details, and – as a common conceptual thread throughout the car – intuitive controls. The instruments are ideally arranged. The new steering wheel designs (optionally with multifunction keys) impress both visually and to the touch. The right hand rests ergonomically on the gear shift grip; further up on the center console are the newly designed and intuitive controls for the climate control and radio and radio-navigation systems; this console section is slightly inclined toward the driver for an ideal alignment of the cockpit that focuses on the driver’s needs. Also in optimal view are the round instruments; the multifunction display (trip computer) is located between them. Even in the base version, the rear bench seatback is split 40/60 and folds, increasing the car’s versatility. The tailgate can also be opened from inside the car by a remote unlock switch. Up to six airbags (two front airbags, two side airbags in front, two window airbags / thorax airbags in the area of the front side windows) are also part of the equipment package.
Fuel-efficient engines
Four engines for America: In the USA and Canada, the new Jetta is offered with three petrol engines and one turbodiesel direct-injection engine (TDI Clean Diesel). Two of the four engines are new on board: the entry-level engine (85 kW / 115 PS) and the common rail TDI (103 kW / 140 PS). Technically perfected in the new model are the 125 kW / 170 PS 2.5-liter gasoline engine and the sporty top engine, the turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI with 147 kW / 200 PS, which will power the top model Jetta GLI in North America starting in 2011. The new 115 PS engine has a combined fuel economy of 28 mpg* (manual transmission); the version with automatic transmission attains a value of 26 mpg*. A technical highlight is the new 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel; thanks to conversion to the world’s leading direct injection diesel system – common rail injection – the turbocharged engine is as quiet as a gasoline engine and as powerful as a sports car engine (320 Newton-meters maximum torque). A particulate filter and a NOx storage catalytic converter ensure that this TDI meets emissions requirements in all states of the USA. A combined fuel economy of 34 mpg makes the new and very agile Jetta 2.0-liter TDI (0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds) one of the most fuel-efficient and lowest emitting vehicles on the North American continent.
All engines are offered with a manual transmission as standard equipment. Of course, an automatic transmission is also available with each engine version as an option. On the new 2.0-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TSI, Volkswagen is implementing the 6-speed DSG – one of the most advanced and efficient automatic transmission systems in the world.
Six engines for Europe: In Europe, the engine strategy will conform to prevailing market conditions. Smaller engine displacements and charging are key objectives here. This means somewhat less power in the base engines, significantly lower engine displacements, and all engines are charged. Four of the six engines are new to the Jetta program and will be added in 2011: The 1.2 TSI (77 kW / 105 PS), 1.4 TSI (118 kW / 160 PS) and two common rail turbodiesels 1.6 TDI (77 / kW 105 PS) and 2.0 TDI (103 kW / 140 PS). As usual, the 1.4 TSI (90 kW / 122 PS) and the 2.0 TSI (147 kW / 200 PS) offer high-tech in proven form. Except for the 1.2 TSI, all engines may be paired with a 6-speed DSG (77 kW TDI, 103 kW TDI, 147 kW TSI) or 7-speed DSG (90 kW TSI, 118 kW TSI).
Naturally, every Jetta engine offered in Europe fulfills requirements of the EU-5 emissions standard. The 1.2 TSI and 1.6 TDI are also equipped with the BlueMotion Technology package. This means that their technical features include a Start-Stop system and battery regeneration. The new Jetta 1.2 TSI BlueMotion Technology consumes just 5.3 l/100 km* (equivalent to 123 g/km* CO2) – an absolute top value for a gasoline-powered sedan with a top speed of 190 km/h. The Jetta with 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Technology attains a sensationally low combined fuel consumption of 4.1 l/100* km (109 g/km* CO2); with this engine, the Jetta is the most fuel-efficient 4.6-meter sedan in the world.
* All mpg data are forecast EPA values for the USA. All l/100 km data are forecast NEDC values for Europe.
