TOYOTA GT86: DESIGNED AND PRICED TO DELIGHT

Prices and equipment specification revealed for Toyota GT86
Two versions available: six-speed manual at £24,995 on-the-road, six-speed automatic at £26,495
Single high specification includes limited slip differential, dual-zone climate control, sports seats, bi-xenon headlights and 17-inch alloys
Options include Toyota Touch and Go with satellite navigation and leather and Alcantara upholstery
Available to order now, customer deliveries from 1 July

With just three months to go before Toyota’s GT86 officially takes to Britain’s roads, details of the new model’s equipment specifications and prices have been announced.

Early media reports about the new car’s handling and performance signal that Toyota has succeeded in recapturing the essential joy of driving that it put at the heart of the GT86 project. More attractive still is the fact great performance does not come with a prohibitive price tag: as expected, the range starts at £24,995 for the manual version, with the automatic at £26,495. There is just one equipment grade. Orders are being taken now, with deliveries from 1 July.

With a front-mounted 2.0-litre “boxer” engine and rear wheel drive, the light, low and nimble GT86 has a classic sports car set-up. The styling and specification reflect its driver-focused character: exterior features include a rear spoiler, 17-inch light alloy wheels, chrome-finished dual exhaust tailpipes and a signature “T”-mesh grille. That T motif is repeated in the shape of the rear foglight, set centrally between the tailpipes.

A limited slip differential also fitted as standard, reaffirming GT86′s essential “driver’s car” character.

Other features include bi-xenon high intensity discharge headlights, LED daytime running lights, front fog lamps and electric folding door mirrors with housings matched to the car’s body colour. Seven exterior colours are available: Dark Red, Silver metallic, Black metallic, Blue metallic, Dark Red metallic, Orange metallic and Pearl pearlescent.

Optional side, roof and bonnet decals are available in black or silver to add an extra dimension to GT86′s sporting appearance.

The GT86 badge is a small but attractive detail just forward of the base of the A-pillars, depicting four drifting tyres within the number 86, set between two horizontal “boxer” pistons.

The 2+2 cabin further emphasises the essential character of the GT86, with a cockpit designed around the driver, front sports seats, aluminium pedals and contrasting red stitching around the black leather trimmed steering wheel, gear knob and parking brake. Black cloth upholstery is standard, but customers have the option of black leather and Alcantara, or black leather with red Alcantara and additional red leather styling details on the door grips, steering wheel, gear knob and parking brake. Both of these options also include heaters for the front seats.

Access is easy thanks to the Smart Entry system, and the cabin environment can be programmed for comfort with dual-zone air conditioning. The high quality extends to an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, cruise control, hill-start assist, scuff plates and the Toyota Touch touchscreen control system for controlling the six-speaker audio system, with Bluetooth for phone connection and music streaming, and a USB port. As an option, the system can be upgraded to Toyota Touch and Go, with satellite navigation and advanced functions such as speed and safety camera warnings, on-board connection to Google Local Search and (via subscription) connected services providing data such as live parking and fuel price information and local weather forecasts.

Active safety provisions include a switchable VSC stability control system, which can be adjusted through three driving modes to suit driver preference, and a torque-sensing limited slip differential. Seven airbags are provided, including a driver’s knee airbag.

The six-speed automatic transmission available for GT86′s includes paddle shifts to give the driver the option of making manual gear changes.

Enhanced style: New Twingo Renaultsport 133 features new Renault visual identity with prominent logo and black detailing, plus specific black headlight and front foglight surrounds

New standard equipment at no extra cost includes: F1-style front blade, Bluetooth™, cruise control, speed limiter, worth in excess of £500. Optional Cup chassis available for £700, with one exterior pack – Anthracite Style – costing £150
CO2 emissions reduced to 150g/km and combined-cycle fuel economy improved by three per cent to 43.5 mpg

Following its world debut at last autumn’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the flurry of new arrivals at Renault continues this spring with the French marque’s new-look Twingo Renaultsport 133. The upgraded pocket-rocket bursts onto the scene on 2nd April when ordering opens, priced at £13,565 on-the-road.

The changes to the facelifted Renaultsport version of Twingo are immediately apparent at the front, including the new Renault visual identity of its more humble sibling, combined with the added visual drama of a new dynamic grille design with four lights and a front bumper incorporating an F1-style blade. This detail, which now runs across the full Renaultsport range, alludes to Renault’s success in Formula 1.

From the back, the halo model in the brand’s city car range, sports several model-specific additions including a black rear spoiler, a special rear bumper incorporating a diffuser and aerodynamic extensions on the rear wheel arches.

On the inside, the performance aura of the flagship Twingo continues with Renaultsport yellow stitching on the steering wheel and seats, together with white detailing for the top of the steering wheel, seat backs and cushions, rev-counter surround and air conditioning controls.

Aside from its new body-colour F1-style blade, core equipment on the latest revised Renaultsport includes 16” alloy wheels, Bluetooth™, cruise control, electric Gloss Black door mirrors, ESC (with on/off switch), speed limiter, extra tinted windows and tailgate, Renaultsport exhaust with chrome tailpipe, plus Twingo’s versatile independent sliding and folding rear seats.

Several options are available on the baby of the Renaultsport range, among them 17” Anthracite or Gloss Black alloy wheels for £500, curtain airbags for £250, metallic paint at £460, or the even more striking Renaultsport Liquid Yellow i.d. paint for £1,300 (from end May 2012). The unique-in-class Renaultsport Monitor telemetry system is also available at a tempting £125. Given its already purposeful stance, just one exterior pack is offered – Anthracite Style – for the front blade, door mirrors covers and rear spoiler, priced at £150.

Renaultsport expertise

Dieppe’s finest have chosen not to tinker with Twingo Renaultsport 133’s award-winning mechanicals, so its performance and grin-inducing driving characteristics remain intact. Its 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated powerplant still puts out a feisty 133hp at 6,750rpm, with 160Nm of torque available at 4,400rpm. Its top speed is a respectable 125 mph, with 0-62 mph dispatched in an impressive 8.7 seconds.

Although the new range offers one version of the 133 with the standard Renaultsport chassis, an optional Cup chassis is still available for £700. The latter includes a ride height lowered by 4mm, stiffer springs and dampers, 17” Anthracite or Gloss Black alloy wheels and wider 205/40 R17 tyres than its predecessor. In keeping with its potency, Twingo Renaultsport 133 features plenty of stopping power, with 280mm-diameter front discs and 240mm-diameter rear discs.

Despite its impressive performance credentials, the revised Twingo Renaultsport 133 boasts CO2 emissions of 150g/km, a saving of 3.2 per cent compared to its predecessor and improved fuel consumption of 43.5 mpg combined cycle, up by three per cent.

Since its launch in September 2008, Twingo Renaultsport has emerged as a top-three seller in its class, with sales totalling more than 10,000 vehicles.

Volvo V60 Plug-In Diesel Hybrid Most Exciting New Green Car in UK

The very first rechargeable diesel hybrid is the UK’s most highly anticipated new green car for 2012, according to a new survey.

Despite the strength of some of the competition, the Volvo V60 Plug-In Diesel Hybrid took a clear lead in the poll run by TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk, collecting more than double the votes-at 30 per cent-than the second place Volt/Ampera*.

The ground-breaking new car from Volvo might be exciting news for UK car buyers, but fans will have to be quick as less than 150 examples of the V60 Plug-In Hybrid are expected to arrive here this year. Sadly, the car will be limited to just 1,000 models for its first year with just a fraction of that first production run coming to the UK, arriving from November this year.

While other diesel hybrids will have started to arrive in the UK before the V60, including the Citroen DS5 (which came third in the poll with 10 per cent* of the vote), what makes the V60 Plug-In special is its rechargeable nature, the first car to combine a diesel engine with the function to top up the battery for increased electric range. The only plug-in hybrid to beat it to the market will be the petrol-driven Toyota Prius Plug-In (in seventh place), which arrives this summer. What’s more, Volvo is promoting the car as ‘three in one’ and calling the model its ‘most technically advanced model’ ever thanks to its unique combined qualities as a car that can operate on electricity alone, as a hybrid or as a four wheel-drive vehicle.

2012 is set to be an exciting year for ‘green cars’ with many new hybrids, full battery electric and super fuel-efficient petrol and diesel cars set to arrive over the coming months. The Chevrolet Volt/Vauxhall Ampera is another highly anticipated model, coming second in the poll with 11 per cent of the vote. Although essentially the same car, the Volt will arrive in the UK ahead of its Vauxhall-badged cousin. Both models boast the flexibility to drive on battery power alone in suitable conditions with a back-up petrol engine to boost the range to over 300 miles.

With Volvo’s new model taking first place in the survey, the website’s editor, Faye Sunderland explains why she thinks the UK public is so excited by it: “The V60 Plug-In Diesel Hybrid is a car we’ve been buzzing about for the past year, closely following its development into a production-ready model.

“While likely to find homes in the company car sector as a premium priced product, the V60 Plug-In is a no-compromise model which offers luxury, performance and yet emits as little as 49g/km CO2 and achieves up to 134mpg** on a combined cycle. It’s green without being mean to human desire.”

Nick Connor, Acting Managing Director for Volvo Car UK, said: “This survey is great news for Volvo as it shows there is a genuine demand for a new type of plug-in vehicle that combines the benefits of electric cars with the long-distance range of a diesel model.

“The V60 Plug-in Diesel Hybrid is a car that you really could use all the time – whether it’s with zero tailpipe emissions in electric mode on the daily commute, or using a combination of electric and diesel power for a 500-mile cross-country journey. It’s also world-first technology for Volvo so we’re delighted to see that the UK’s drivers are just as excited about its arrival as we are.”
